PATTEN, Maine — Police arrested a Patten man Thursday after they say he led officers on a high speed chase that began in Penobscot County and ended when the vehicle spun off the road in Aroostook County.
Penobscot County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Matheson was patrolling Route 11 in Patten when he attempted to stop an older silver sedan for several unspecified violations, according to a statement issued Friday by Chief Deputy William Birch.
Instead of stopping, however, Birch said the driver, 58-year-old Stephen A. Tremblay sped up, reaching “criminal speeds” and leading Matheson on a pursuit through several rural towns.
The chase ended in Island Falls in Aroostook County when Tremblay’s Ford sedan went off the road when he attempted to turn onto Belvedere Road, according to Birch.
Tremblay was arrested without incident. No injuries or damage was reported.
Tremblay’s vehicle was towed and a local Animal Control Officer was called to assist with the dog that Tremblay had with him in the car.
Tremblay was taken to the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor and charged with eluding an officer, operating under the influence, driving to endanger, operating after suspension, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, criminal speed and reckless conduct.
