PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls took on in-state rival Husson University Saturday and lost both ends of a softball doubleheader. The scores at Boucher Field on Saturday afternoon were 9-1 in the first game and 8-2 in the second.
The losses ended a six-game winning streak by the Owls.
In the opener, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first courtesy of an Owls error, which brought home the first run, followed by a Kylie Kennedy single that scored two more.
Sara Packard of the Owls knocked in her team’s only run on a sacrifice bunt that scored pinch runner Hailey Davenport from third base in the second inning.
The Eagles scored three more times in the fourth and put the game away with three more in the sixth.
Jen Jones pitched all six innings and earned a win on the mound for the Eagles, allowing only two hits and one run.
Marissa Reagle and Melanee Terry recorded a hit each for the Owls. Packard took the loss on the mound, surrendering eight hits and striking out four in five innings of work.
The Eagles also took game two thanks to a four-run rally in the fourth inning that wiped out a 2-1 deficit. A double off the bat of Olivia Smith, singles by Morgan Coleman and Kendra Wilson and a triple by Shelby Burge contributed to the outburst for the Eagles.
UMPI had taken the lead in the top of the second as Madison Exferd came across on a wild pitch before Davenport scored on an infield error by Husson.
Smith came on in relief and pitched the final four innings to gain the pitching victory. Packard and Brookelynn Garcia pitched three innings each for the Owls.
Terry doubled and Delanie Strout and Ayana Walker each singled for UMPI’s hits.
The Owls, now 9-7 and ranked ninth in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, will return to Bangor Wednesday, April 11, to play another doubleheader against the Eagles. The first game will start at 3 p.m.
