CARIBOU, Maine — Before starting their April 9 meeting, Caribou city councilors heard a limerick written by James Bennett, who recently won a contest at the Caribou Public Library.
After Mayor David Martin introduced Bennett and asked him if he wanted to read his winning composition from the competition’s elementary school aged division, the young writer stepped up to the council’s table microphones.
“I eat chicken stew with a spoon,” Bennett read. “While I watch the sparkling moon. I eat steak with a fork. And I come from New York. But I prefer ice cream at noon.”
Councilors and guests applauded, and Martin told Bennett “Just to show you how old I am, your father is a former student of mine,” eliciting laughter from attendants.
The mayor thanked him for coming before moving on to the regular meeting.
