115 Years Ago – April 14, 1903
Fresh — C.H. Merill, proprietor of the Vaughan House, is thoroughly renovating the various rooms in the large hotel, papering, painting and whitewashing them.
The cheese is back — Arthur V. Goud has rented the Hardison cheese factory and will make cheese again this season, beginning about June 1.
100 Years Ago – April 17, 1918
Addition — R. L. Pitcher is preparing to build an addition to his already large plant near the C.P. station.
Ice out — The ice in the Aroostook River went out on Wednesday forenoon.
75 Years Ago – April 14, 1943
Junior Ex. — The Annual Junior Exhibition will be held at the High School tomorrow night, with both boy and girl contestants speaking on the same program. Contestants will be Joan Robinson, Carolyn Doyle, Harriet Hutchinson, Florence Munson, Dorothy Publicover, Edith Daniels, Philip McGill, Williams Small, Reginald Roderick and Sterling Tibbets. Dr. H.L. Runion of the University of Maine will be the judge of the contest.
High school to honor graduates — A memorial service for Caribou High School graduates or students now serving in the armed forces will be held in the auditorium at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. The parents of those now serving are cordially invited by school authorities to attend this service as well.
50 Years Ago – April 17, 1968
“Hands off” policy — A “hands off” policy has been adopted by Caribou City Council with regard to the proposed shopping center in the Corriveau Development area. Councilman Donald Collins set the tenor of the council’s attitude at the Monday evening meeting when he stated that the council had done all the legal work to make it possible for the shopping center to be located here when it re-zoned the Corriveau development from residential to shopping center status.
Expansion sale — Mike Bell, owner of “Mike’s Myty IGA” on West Sweden Street in Caribou, announced an “expansion sale” starting today to celebrate the completion of his renovated and enlarged store. The remodeling began last August and was recently completed. The new store features wide shopping aisles, a larger fresh meat department, and a greatly improved fresh fruits and produce section.
25 Years Ago – April 1993
Ugone to retire — James Ugone, principal of Caribou High School, will retire in June after 18 years on the job. President of the Maine Principals Association, Ugone, 61, has become famous for his Christmas parties the past few years. This year, more than 700 students received gifts valued at $15,000 from funds raised in the school and the community. The board also accepted the resignation of Stewart Cousins, business teacher at the high school, Cindy Smith, grade 8 cheerleading coach, and Cynthia Huston, grade 7 and 8 girls soccer coach. This coming fall, pupils in grades preK to 2 will attend Hilltop Elementary School; pupils in grades 3 and 4 will go to Teague Park Elementary School.
Grand opening — A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday, Apr. 7, to mark the grand opening of Sonny’s Jewelry on Sweden Street in Caribou. Present to cut the ribbon were Vicki Smith, executive director, Caribou Chamber of Commerce; Mark Sleeper, chamber president; Sonny Tracy, owner; and Robert McMahan, deputy mayor.
