PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Christina Mae York 81, passed away Thursday April 12, 2018 surrounded by her family at a Bangor hospital. She was born March 7, 1937 in St. Francis, the daughter of Isaac V. and Elsie (Brownell) Hafford. She received her associates degree in office assistance from Northern Maine Technical College in 1993 and worked at Burrell’s in Presque Isle.
Christina enjoyed knitting, playing dice, playing cards; especially Skip-bo, word search puzzles, reading the newspaper and spending time with her whole family. Every night she would watch the news to catch the weather so she could help keep her family safe. She was always thinking of everyone else. Her family meant the world to her! She was and is the world to her family.
When she was 39 years old her one and only love and father of her children passed away. She devoted her life to the “Good Lord above,” her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was and is the rock of her family. Christina’s house was the gathering place for all her kids, their friends and their friend’s friends. “Going to Nana’s house was part of our day, we could always count on a plate of her famous eggs or a famous grilled cheese sandwich. She would sit gently with anyone who came in the door, feed them, and let them tell her about our day.” In the words her grandchildren, she was not just a Gram, she was our second Mom! Her home was our home. Her door was always open, no matter the time or day. She often felt like she could give us nothing, but that was untrue. She gave us everything she had. She was selfless. She was unearthly, a true angel among us. What she gave us is incomparable to what most families ever experience. There are no words to explain how very fortunate we all are.
She is survived by three sons; Robert Lee York and his wife Barb of Fort Fairfield, Herbert Allen York and his wife Rose of Presque Isle, and Bruce Wayne York and his wife Richarda of South Paris, two daughters “Chee Chee” Levasseur of Presque Isle, Deborah Ann Beckwith and her special friend Michael of Ellsworth, three sisters; Mary West, Ida Beaulieu, and Ella Leighton, all of Fort Fairfield, 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Herbert Daniel York, two brothers Dana and Vincent, four sisters Ann, Mona, Viola, and Rose.
