Track athletes enjoy success in first meet

OLD TOWN, Maine — Track season began with a flurry Saturday as athletes from Houlton, Hodgdon and Greater Houlton Christian Academy competed for the first time this spring.

“It was a great first meet for the Houlton program as several of our students got their first steps on the track,” said coach Chris Rines. “We have 19 freshman and first-year students in the program and only two of them have any previous history with either the Rec track program or middle school competition. The new kids struggled as they got into the flow of how track meets operate but we did have several highlights throughout the day.”

Grace Graham was the only individual winner on the day, as she took top honors in the 800 meter.

Qualifying for states were senior three-year athletes Amelia Hanning (Houlton) in the 100 meter and Bridget Hill (GHCA) in the 3200 meter. Provisional marks were put up by first-year athlete Tessa Solomon in the javelin and freshman Emma Ardell in the 300 hurdle.

“For a vacation week meet, I thought we did very well,” Rines said. “This was certainly our largest group of kids that we have been able to take to a meet on vacation week. We usually lose about half the team because of family or school trips. We also had a very nice fanbase make the trip downl. I was happy to see a lot of familiar faces in the crowd cheer us along the day.”
