Houlton unveils 2018 honor parts

HOULTON, Maine — Houlton High School Principal Marty Bouchard announced April 23 the honor parts for the Class of 2018.

Kolleen Bouchard has been named valedictorian, while Carolyn Mooers was tabbed as salutatorian. The first honor essayist is Rebecca Mooers, while Anessa Wilde was named second honor essayist and  Kristen Graham was tabbed as third honor essayist and also class marshal.

Kolleen Bouchard is the daughter of Marty and Karen Bouchard of Houlton. She is the president of Houlton’s Chapter of the National Honor Society and is a member of the varsity soccer and basketball teams, recently receiving the honor of being named Miss Basketball by the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches. Bouchard was also selected as the Gatorade Maine Girls Basketball Player of the Year and the USA Today All-USA Maine Girls Basketball Player of the Year, as well as being awarded the Maine Principal’s Award and the Butch Shaw Award for Soccer.

Bouchard received the Principal’s Award throughout her academic career and was the recipient of the University of Rochester George Eastman Young Leader Award, the Houlton High School Chemistry Award, and was a two-time New England Student Leadership Conference nominee. She is also a four-time Owen Osbourne Tournament MVP, a four-time All Tournament First Team Selection, and was tapped four years in the running for the Bangor Daily News All State Basketball Team (second team 2014-2015, first team 2015-2018) in addition to being selected as Student of the Month for Excellence in Athletics.

Her outstanding four-year run on the varsity basketball and soccer teams garnered her positions on one state championship team for soccer and two state championship teams for basketball. Also, she was twice named the Big East Player of the Year, a Portland Press Herald All State three times, a WAGM TV Player of the Week, and was the Eastern Maine Sports Player of the Week on 19 occasions. She was on the All New England Soccer Team, was named the Penobscot Valley Player of the Year for Soccer in 2017, and she earned a spot on the All New England Soccer Team the past two years while also being named a Penobscot Valley Conference Scholar Athlete.

In addition to her academics and athleticism, Bouchard is a class officer, having served as secretary the past two years. She is also a volunteer with the annual Elks Hoop Shoot and with Special Olympics, as well as having spent hundreds of hours volunteering with youth soccer, basketball camps, and at tournaments. Her interests include sports, AAU basketball, and spending time with family and friends. She will attend Bentley University in the fall where she will pursue a degree in business.

Carolyn Mooers is the daughter of David and Nancy Mooers of Houlton. She is a member of Houlton’s Chapter of the National Honor Society and competes on the varsity soccer, basketball, and softball teams, for which she has been on two state championships teams (Soccer and Basketball). Carolyn Mooers is an honors student who has served as a delegate for both Dirigo Girls State and Maine Youth in Government in addition to being named a Penobscot Valley Conference Scholar Athlete.

She is also a recipient of the Good Citizen Award and serves as a class officer, Student Council member, and as a Houlton High School Mentor. She is employed by the Houlton Recreation Department and teaches Sunday School at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Houlton. Carolyn’s interests and hobbies include playing sports and spending time with friends and family. She will attend Saint Joseph’s College in the fall where she will pursue a degree in nursing.

Rebecca Mooers is also the daughter of David and Nancy Mooers of Houlton and twin sister of Carolyn. She is a member of Houlton’s Chapter of the National Honor Society and competes on the varsity soccer and tennis teams as well as serving as the manager of the girls varsity basketball team.

She is an honors student who has received the Good Citizenship Award and was Student of the Month for Excellence in Academic Studies. In addition to travelling to France as a Rotary Youth Exchange Ambassador, Rebecca Mooers was selected as a delegate for Dirigo Girls State, Maine Youth in Government, and the New England Student Leadership Conference. She was also a three-time All Aroostook in tennis, a PVC Honorable Mention in tennis, an All Aroostook Athletic Academic, and was named to the All-Academic Team for soccer while also competing on the state championship soccer team. She is a Houlton High School Mentor and serves as a class officer in addition to helping out with activities at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Houlton.

Her interests include traveling, sports, hiking, and spending time with friends and family. She will attend Clark University in the fall where she will pursue a degree in biology.

Wilde is the daughter of Traci Storti of Houlton and Tim Wilde of Houlton. She is an honors student in the Gifted and Talented Program who serves as the senior class president, student council co-president, and vice-president of Houlton’s Chapter of the National Honor Society, as well as being a member of the National Technical Honor Society.

Wilde competed on the girls varsity soccer team throughout high school, including being a member of the state championship winning team and making the PVC All-Academic Team, while also having participated in varsity softball and cheerleading.

She travelled to Italy with the Rotary Youth Exchange Program in 2016 and was a Model State Legislature and Youth in Government delegate in addition to serving on the RSU 29 Board of Directors as a student representative and on the Culinary Arts Advisory Board. She is a member of the Houlton School of Dance and was the recipient of the Good Citizenship Award, the Margaret Qualey English Award, the University of Rochester’s Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences, the Excellence in Honors English

Award, the Excellence in Physics Award, the Excellence in AP US History Award, and was named student of the month for Excellence in Social Studies.

Wilde’s interests include snow-sledding, skiing, reading, traveling, and baking. She is also an employee of the Taste of China and Grammy’s Country Inn. Wilde will attend Johnson and Wales University in the fall where she will pursue a double major in culinary arts and in food and beverage entrepreneurship.

Graham is the daughter of Shawn and Angela Graham of Littleton. She is a member of Houlton’s Chapter of the National Honor Society and competed on the girls varsity basketball team, having been on the state championship winning team, and the varsity softball team (1st team pitching). She was also on the Big East PVC All Defensive Team in addition to being named a McDonald’s All Star and achieving All Aroostook for softball and basketball.

Graham is an honors student who has been named Student of the Month as well as being selected as a New England Student Leadership Conference delegate, a PVC Basketball Honorable Mention, and making the PVC All Academic Team. Her hobbies include athletics. Kristen will attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the fall where she will pursue a degree as a physical therapist assistant.
