Spring rain means more postponements on the local varsity sports schedule. Fort Fairfield’s games against Central Aroostook in Mars Hill will not be played Thursday and a make-up date has not been set, according to Heather Bradbury, athletic director at Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School.
Katahdin’s baseball and softball squads were slated to play at Hodgdon, but those games were moved to Friday at 4 p.m.
Greater Houlton Christian Academy also was scheduled to play at Southern Aroostook Thursday, but that game was postponed. No date has been set for when it will be played.
Caribou was scheduled to host Fort Kent in tennis, but that match will now be played as part of a doubleheader in Caribou on May 10. Presque Isle’s match at Madawaska has been rescheduled for 3:30 p.m. on April 30.
The Vikings’ tennis match against John Bapst, originally set for Saturday, has been moved up due to the threat of rain. It will now be played Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Baseball
Houlton 9, Caribou 7 — At Houlton Wednesday, in a cold, drizzly game, Pat Howe yielded one unearned run in five innings on the mound as the Shires improved to 2-0 on the year with a win over Caribou. Nick Perfitt closed out the game, getting the save for the Shires.
Woodland 10, East Grand 0 — At Baileyville, the Vikings were shut out in their season-opener. Individual results were not reported.
Softball
Caribou 21 Houlton 11 — The Vikings prevailed on the Shires’ home field behind Emily Adler and Taylor Devoe’s offensive exploits.
Adler doubled and tripled and Devoe doubled and singled, with each driving in three runs. Devoe also scored three times. Jaelynn Doody also scored three runs and had an RBI. Heather DeMerchant picked up the pitching win for 1-2 Caribou.
For Houlton (0-2), Aspen Flewelling ripped a two-run homer and Elizabeth Phillips collected three hits and knocked in a run. Victoria Forbush suffered the pitching loss.
Woodland 6, East Grand 3 — At Baileyville, Woodland doubled up East Grand in the Vikings season-opener. Individual results were not reported.
Tennis
Caribou’s boys and girls tennis squads defeated Houlton 5-0 in both matches Tuesday. The matches were originally slated to be played in Houlton, but were moved to Caribou due to Houlton’s courts not being ready.

Individual boys results, with Caribou players listed first, were: in singles, Alec Cyr defeated Nolan Porter, 8-3; Parker Deprey beat Tim Youngfellow, 8-1; and Gabe Rand bested Ben Grant, 8-0.
In doubles, Bailey Griffith and Sawyer Deprey defeated Jaron Gentle and Isaac Vega, 8-0; and Emerson Duplissie-Cyr and Seth Beidelman beat Devin Ivey and Jeremy Cook, 8-0.
In girls tennis, the individual results, with Vikings listed first, were: in singles, Gabrielle Marquis beat Rebecca Mooers, 8-1; Ashley Matlock defeated Sydney Lorom, 8-0; and Hailey Holmquist bested Maddie Grant, 8-0.
In doubles, Ciara Richards and Danielle Hanson defeated Grace Johnson and Emily Miller, 8-1; and Maddie Stratton and Kyra Thibault beat Reagan Perfitt and Dina Koretsky, 8-0.
