Track athletes shine at Foxcroft meet

DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Track athletes from Houlton, Hodgdon and Greater Houlton Christian Academy endured a more than five-hour long meet Saturday at Foxcroft Academy.

“We had a great day down in Foxcroft, despite a few technical problems on their (Foxcroft Academy’s) side,” Houlton coach Chris Rines said. “Halfway through the meet the PA system quit and we were without direction momentarily. They were able to get it back working after awhile, but the meet had extended into its 5th hour by the time it started working again and you could see the athletes and everyone really just kind of wearing down. The meet was moving along rather slow to begin with but that really complicated the issue.”

Girls team scores were: Brewer 216, Old Town 143, Caribou 136, Houlton 33, GHCA 23, Fort Fairfield 14, Washburn 11 and Greenville 2.

Boys team scores were: Brewer 172, Caribou 165, Old Town, 95, Foxcroft Academy 41, Fort Fairfield 38, Greenville 26, Hodgdon 16, Washburn 14, GHCA 10 and Houlton 8.

“(Houlton’s) Mia Hanning pulled off back to back individual victories in the 100 and 200 meter against some of the toughest competition she will see this season in Brewer, Caribou, and Old Town athletes,” Rines said. “The senior captain is running some of the best times of her career and is also the anchor of the Houlton girls 4×100 meter which also scored at the meet.”

Tessa Solomon joins Hanning as the only other automatic state qualifying Houlton girl thus far, while GHCA’s Graham and Bridget Hill have automatic bids to states as well. The GHCA girls 4×800 relay team also pulled off the victory against three other teams.

“To date we have these individuals qualified for the two postseason championship meets,” Rines said. “Only Houlton students are eligible for the PVC meet while all are able to qualify for the state championship.”

Competitors on a provisional list are considered for qualification after all automatic bids are entered if there is still room in the particular fields.

The following students all hit personal bests at the meet: Joel Bond (1600, long jump), Cameron Callnan (high jump, javelin), Justin Cook (javelin), Tristan Cosby (discus), Jarret Fournier (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Wesley Ganglfinger (3200), Daniel McNally (javelin), Donald Ouellette (800), Isaac Potter (1600, 800), Damon Reynolds (shot put, discus, javelin), Brandon Roshto (100, 200), Jeremy Stone (1600, 3200), Cole Winslow (110), Emma Ardell (200, 300 hurdles), Delaney Despres (200), Emmalyne Drake (400, 800), Chloe Fekete (800), Grace Graham (800, 1600), Hanning (shotput), Bridget Hill (800, 1600), Solomon (100 hurdles, javelin) and Lauren Swimm (100, 200).
