100 Years Ago – May 1, 1918
Selected to speak — H. Earl Lewin and Robt. Wilkins of this town, and Arthur Mills of Monticello, all Ricker Classical Institute graduates, now at Colby College, have been selected to speak in the finals of the annual Hallowell Prize Oration contest.
Presentation — ‘Within the Law’ will be presented by the Senior Class of Houlton High School on May 17 at Heywood Opera House. Seats will be reserved at the Box Office at 9 o’clock that morning.
75 Years Ago – May 6, 1943
New manager — Paul A. McGillicuddy was elected manager of the Houlton Grange Store at a meeting of the board of directors. Next Monday morning he will enter upon his duties, succeeding to the position held by his father-in-law, the late Byron R. Stewart. Mr. McGillicuddy is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. McGillicuddy of Houlton. He is a former employee of the Houlton Grange store and resigned his position as representative of the Bay State Milling Company to accept his new position. He is a graduate of St. Mary’s School and Houlton High School in the class of 1933 and is member of the Houlton Lions Club and Houlton Council, Knights of Columbus.
Elected — Miss Sigrid Tompkins was elected president of the American Association of University Women at the annual meeting and election of officers. Other officers elected were, vice president, Mrs. Mary Hall; secretary, Mrs. Eleanor Donald; treasurer, Miss Alice Lincoln. Mrs. Donald, chairman of the program, gave an interesting paper on Canada. Hostesses were Mrs. Noyes, Elizabeth Rowe and Joyce Ramsey.
50 Years Ago – May 1, 1968
Local leaders — Six prominent Houlton men, Michael Clark, James Carr, Arnold Peabody, Ralph Longstaff, Paul Coleman and Malcolm York, will provide the top leadership of the Northeast District YMCA’s annual finance campaign slated to begin here with a kick-off breakfast at the Parkview Restaurant Monday May 6.
Winner — Emery Nightingale of New Limerick was the recent winner of $500 in the Shell Oil Company’s “Spell Americana” contest. Emery received his check for $500 from Lester Thompson of Thompson Oil Company. On hand was Billy McGary, also of Thompson Oil.
25 Years Ago – May 5, 1993
Awards — Eugene M. Fitzpatrick, district director of the Immigration and Naturalization Service of Portland, presented length-of-service pins to INS officers working at the Houlton, Bridgewater and Fort Fairfield ports of entry. Fitzpatrick presented 10-year service pins to William Grant, Glenn McNally, Larry Gould and Galen White; and to Frank Thibodeau for 20 years and Ed Toner for 35 years of service.
Appreciation — The SAD 70 Teacher’s Association on May 4 recognized colleagues for many years of dedicated service with a reception in the Elementary School gym and by presenting every teacher with a slate that was handmade by associates. The theme for National Teacher Week, celebrated across the country this week, is ‘Honoring those who help us learn.’ Working on the slates were; Cindy Floyd, Susan Bushey, Joanne Inman, Alison Bossie and Brenda Adams.
