101 Years Ago – May 3, 1917
Normal school — The first step toward the construction of a new normal school building at Presque Isle was taken Thursday, April 26, when the architect, W. D. Mansur of Bangor, came and staked out the site for the new building. Accompanying him was State Superintendent of Schools G. W. Starkey, and normal school trustees Chas. P. Allen of Presque Isle and James F. Singleton of Bangor.
75 Years Ago – May 6, 1943
Corps promotes Pomeroy — The promotion of Margaret L. Pomeroy of Presque Isle to the rank of technician, fourth grade, in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, was announced by Major General Milton A. Reckord, Commanding General of the Third Service Command. Sergeant Pomeroy was assigned to the WAAC recruiting station in Baltimore. She was a receptionist and did publicity work. A graduate of Presque Isle High School, she attended Aroostook State Normal School. Before being graduated, she moved to New Haven, Conn., with her father, Lawrence Pomeroy.
PTA head — Mrs. Joseph Akeley was elected president of the Training School PTA. Other officers elected were: Mrs. Lloyd Greenlaw, vice president; Mrs. Philip Bishop, secretary; and Donald Sweeney, treasurer. Chief speaker of the session was Lt. Bannis of the Presque Isle AirField, who spoke on social diseases. The retiring president, Mrs. Williams Hanscom, was presented a corsage of roses by C.O.T. Wieden, principal of the Normal School, as token of appreciation.
50 Years Ago – May 1, 1968
Bound for Millinocket — Robert D. (“Robbie”) Robinson, advertising representative for The Star-Herald, was transferred to Millinocket as editor of the Millinocket Journal. He graduated from Houlton High School, attended Aroostook State College and Ricker College. He served two years in the Army and taught school for five years in the Caribou and Mars Hill school systems. He joined the The Star-Herald staff in December 1966 as sports editor and became a full-time staff member of the newspaper in June 1967.
Auction raises $1,000 — The Easton Lions Club held a very successful auction in spite of the economic situation. Generous merchants and contributors donated from Easton as well as adjoining towns to make up a varied assortment of articles from mailboxes to miniature trucks. A total of over $1,000 was raised for the various Lions projects, which included Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls State, Dollars for Scholars, Little League, Christmas Baskets and the Sight Program.
25 Years Ago – May 5, 1993
Track team triumphs — The Caribou girls and the Presque Isle boys recorded first-place finishes during a track meet held at the new facility at Skyway Middle School. On the girls’ side, Caribou’s Neali Ouellette placed first in both the long jump and the 400 meter run to lead her team to the win. The Lady Vikes posted 76 points, edging out Hodgdon’s 73. Fort Fairfield (50) and Presque Isle (41) were second and third, respectively. For the boys, Presque Isle featured 11 first-place performances in picking up 130 points and the meet victory. Caribou was second with 90 points, while Fort Fairfield tallied 48.
Loan officer — Gary B. Sirois, president of Farm Credit of Aroostook, announced the appointment of Peter D. Hallowell as loan officer in the Presque Isle office. Hallowell received a BS degree in finance from the University of Maine, Orono in 1989, and his MBA at Orono in 1991. He was formerly the executive director of the Limestone Development Foundation, Inc.
