Island Falls notes – week of May 2, 2018

There is still not much happening here in town. I heard through the grapevine that the one and only restaurant here has closed it doors as of two weeks ago, so now we have to go elsewhere to get our coffee and whatever.

I was in Houlton a few days ago with good neighbor, Susie York, and we decided to have lunch at the Elm Tree Diner and while there met three friends who were also having lunch — Anne Odgers and Faye Drew of Island Falls and Jane Pomeroy Foster of Caribou. It was great to see them all and very unexpected, too.

The snow has finally decided to melt away since we have had several good warm days. I can now see most of my backyard, with only a couple of large patches down near the woods.

The deer were having a heyday there the other afternoon, or at least four of them were. There were four of them that were chasing each other all over the now bare ground and were in and out of the woods in a flash, with their white tails just a-flying. The older deer stood and watched this performance and continued with their grazing. Then, suddenly, all was quiet as the young ones decided they too were hungry and went about grazing instead of playing.

I have seen a little red squirrel around lately, but am not encouraging him by leaving food outside.

I have lots and lots of finch still and they are really emptying the tube feeder every day. I still have a bunch of big black crows who show up every day, and they still like to perch on the branches of the birch tree there. Even though some of the branches look quite fragile, they continue to perch there and take their chances of the branch breaking away.
