If the weather cooperates, local varsity teams will be busy Friday and Saturday as several baseball and softball games, tennis matches and track meets are on the docket.
On Friday, the Hodgdon baseball and softball teams travel to Mars Hill for 3 p.m. contests against Central Aroostook. Washburn plays East Grand in Danforth, Fort Kent is at Fort Fairfield, and Wisdom is at Ashland for baseball and softball games beginning at 4 p.m.
It will be the first game of the season for the Washburn softball team, which has had several games postponed due to weather or poor field conditions.
The Houlton boys and girls tennis squads are slated to play at Van Buren at 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the Fort Fairfield baseball team plays its third game in as many days with a make-up game against Central Aroostook in Mars Hill beginning at noon. The Tigers and Panthers meet on the softball field at the same time.
Caribou hosts John Bapst for a doubleheader beginning at noon. The Ellsworth softball team is at Presque Isle for a twinbill that also begins at noon, while the PI baseball team travels to Ellsworth for a doubleheader. The first game begins at noon.
Also Saturday, Greater Houlton Christian Academy baseball travels to Stacyville to take on Katahdin at 11 a.m.; Southern Aroostook baseball and softball head north to take on Madawaska in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and Orono baseball and softball plays at Houlton at 2 p.m.
In tennis, Mount Desert Island makes the trip north to take on Caribou at 1 p.m., while Presque Isle is on the road, squaring off against John Bapst in an indoor match at the Armstrong Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
Presque Isle is one of the many teams participating in an 11 a.m. track and field meet at Brewer, while Caribou, Houlton, Hodgdon, GHCA and Fort Fairfield travel to Ellsworth for a multi-team meet that begins at noon.
Baseball
Fort Fairfield 6, GHCA 2 — Senior pitcher Jared Harvey allowed one earned run over seven innings and Isaac Cyr singled twice and scored a pair of runs as the Tigers improved to 2-0 with Thursday’s home victory.
Colby Langner and Dawson Watson also had hits for Fort Fairfield.
Isaac Potter singled and Austin Winslow and Nick Thompson scored runs for the 1-2 Eagles.
Tennis
Caribou boys 5, Madawaska 0 — The Vikings improved to 5-0 on the season by winning all five matches against the Owls Thursday at the Madawaska Multi Purpose Center’s indoor tennis facility.
In singles, Parker Deprey beat Ben Hebert, 8-0; Alec Cyr stopped Lance Lavoie, 8-1; and Gabe Rand blanked Alex Daigle, 8-0.
The Caribou No. 1 doubles team of Bailey Griffeth and Sawyer Deprey downed Andrew Nadeau and Max Gendreau, 8-0, while the second doubles team of Emerson Duplissie-Cyr and Seth Beidelman was victorious over Caleb Barnett and Jacob Vernon, 8-0.
The Owls are now 0-3 overall.
Caribou girls 5, Madawaska 0 — The Caribou girls stayed undefeated (5-0) by dominating the Owls in Madawaska Thursday.
The Vikings swept the singles matches without giving up a single game. Gabrielle Marquis defeated Kate Ouellette, Ashley Matlock beat Maxis Cyr and Hailey Holmquist shut down Myra Berwick by 8-0 scores.
In doubles, Ciara Richards and Madison Stratton posted an 8-0 victory over Brittany Ouellette and Hanna Thibeault, while Danielle Hanson and Samantha Tourk won their match by forfeit.
Madawaska fell to 0-3 with the loss.
