Aging Well expo to celebrate fifth year

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aging Well-Living Well Expo will return on May 15 for its fifth year.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. at the Smith Wellness Center at Presque Isle’s Northern Maine Community College, and focuses on helping people lead independent and active lives. Individuals of all ages are welcome to attend.

“We are all aging,” said Joy Barresi Saucier, executive director of the Aroostook Agency on Aging, which coordinates the expo along with sponsors NMCC, Cary Medical Center, The Aroostook Medical Center and WAGM.

“As we age, it is important that we learn as much as possible and understand the resources available to us,” Barresi Saucier said. “This keeps us active and engaged in our community, which in turn ensures our communities continue to thrive.”

Aroostook native and author Cathie Pelletier will share a keynote talk titled “Words of Wisdom.” Pelletier said she believes “you are the bridge that connects your family to the past.”

Many folks plan to sit down one day and put their memories on paper as a gift to their families.

“You don’t have to be a writer to do this,” Pelletier said. “You just need to decide that it’s time.”

The daylong event will showcase three breakout sessions, offering a choice of 27 different brief talks on topics to help people age and live well. Exhibitors offering various services will be on hand to answer questions and share information. A buffet lunch is planned.

Registration materials are available at the Aroostook Agency on Aging, local hospitals or by visiting www.aroostookaging.org. For more information call the Agency at 764-3396.
