CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Regional Technology Center has announced that Emerson Duplissie-Cyr has been selected as the Student of the Year for 2018.
A student in both the criminal justice and welding programs at the technology center, he is a senior at Caribou High School and is the son of Tina Duplissie and Tim Cyr.
“I believe that Emerson Duplissie-Cyr exemplifies a top career and technology center student by living the example of what we promote here with the combination of education realized through real-world work experience, teamwork, and professionalism,” said criminal justice instructor Reed Nonken.
“Emerson has been a part of two programs within the Caribou Technology Center this year and has maintained the highest grade point average in both classes. At the same time, he has worked at a local business serving the community while excelling in numerous sports teams and other after-school programs,” Nonken said.
“In addition to the accomplishments directly related to his tech center experiences, Emerson has been an avid supporter of the benefits associated with the technology programs and has consistently demonstrated a professional relationship with both the faculty and students alike,” Nonken said. “Emerson is a model of excellence in education.”
Welding instructor Keith Dumond added, “Emerson brings so much to not only my class but the technology center as well. In my years teaching, Emerson has demonstrated an exceptionally high level of energy and compassion, which not only reflects in the high-quality work he does but also in the opinions of both the students and other instructors around him. In addition to his excellent workmanship, Emerson fosters an atmosphere of fun and compassion, unlike any other student I have had.”
School officials said Duplissie-Cyr is talented both academically and athletically. He is an honor student, in the top 10 of his class. He is also a member of three varsity teams: tennis, cross country skiing and cross country running. He was captain and MVP of the ski team. In addition, he works at local restaurant Eureka Hall.
“He is an incredible example of a young man who has developed excellent time management skills,” said CRTC Director Ralph Conroy. “It is common knowledge that if one wants a project done and done well, Emerson is one who can be counted on to do his very best.”
Duplissie-Cyr is also involved in co-curricular activities and has held many leadership positions, including president of the local Skills USA chapter. As a member of the National Honor Society, he helped plan and coordinate an end-hunger campaign that packaged 30,000 meals.
He will attend Unity College’s conservation law program, with the goal of becoming a Maine State Game Warden.
Duplissie-Cyr and guests attended a banquet in Lewiston to honor the Students of the Year from the 27 career and technical centers in Maine.
