PRESQUE ISLE, Maine–With Mother’s Day just around the corner on May 13, Aroostook County folks young and old recently shared their favorite memories of that special day, including traditions they’ve passed down to their own children and grandchildren.
“I remember picking flowers for my mother and just enjoying the time that I had with her,” Rebecca Johanson of Presque Isle recalled. “She’s in a nursing home now, but I still bring her flowers and spend the day with her.”
Johanson brought her granddaughter, Adrianna Johanson, to Wintergreen Arts Center on May 4 so that the 5-year-old could make a Mother’s Day card for her own mother.
“I’m painting a picture of me, my mom and my brother, Carter,” Adrianna said, as she dipped her fingers in a cup of blue paint. “My birthday is the day before Mother’s Day, so we’re going to celebrate both.”
Creating Mother’s Day cards was one of many popular activities during Wintergreen’s Mini Open Studio. Siblings Joyce, 4, and Simon Hankios, 3, covered their hands and their paper with colorful paint as they made Mother’s Day cards for their mother.
“We’re going to make her breakfast on Mother’s Day,” Joyce said.
Rhonda Chasse of Presque Isle brought her grandchildren Bria, 3, and Brady Bouchard, 18 months, of Caribou, to Mini Open Studio. As the children played with toys in the splash area, she said she looked forward to the family’s Mother’s Day celebration this year.
“I have two children and two grandchildren and we usually get together and have a family meal and spend the day together,” Chasse said.
Ashley Nadeau of Easton stopped by Wintergreen with her 1-year-old son, Owen, and said that she hopes Mother’s Day will become a memorable tradition for them as well.
“I remember picking flowers out of the garden for my mother and serving her breakfast in bed, so maybe he’ll like doing that, too,” Nadeau said.
