AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — The Aroostook Retired Educators association executive board has set the programs for the 2018 summer meetings.
The June 26 meeting will take place at the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum in Littleton. Dr. Norma Desjardins of the St. Apollonia Dental Clinic in Presque Isle will speak, and members will participate in the remembrance program. Lunch will be turkey dinner will all the fixings, including homemade pies.
The July 31 meeting will be held at Nowland Hall at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Scott Voisine, dean of community education, will discuss the Rural U program. There will be a buffet luncheon.
The August 28 meeting, to be held at the Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center, will feature Rick Duncan, Chairman of the Board of the Aroostook House of Comfort, who will discuss the facility. A chicken dinner will be served.
The September 25 meeting will be held at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center. The program will be Service Above Self and will feature Rena Kearney’s presentation of her trip to Guatemala. A roast pork dinner will be served.
AREA public relations representative Robin Barker encouraged all retired teachers to join the group.
“Renew old friendships, stay in touch with fellow retired educators, and find ways to be involved in one of the most important professions in these challenging times,” she said. “As public education is attacked, the input and involvement of retired teachers is even more important.”
Yearly dues are $7; meals are $15. Registration for each meeting starts at 11 a.m. with the luncheon to follow at noon. The business meeting concludes each day’s activities.
Two ongoing projects are the donation of non-perishable foods for distribution to local food pantries and the bulging backpack project.
