100 Years Ago – May 15, 1918
Improvements made — The interior appearance of the Almon H. Fogg Co., store has been very much improved by the addition of a 30-foot wall case for the display of automobile and sporting accessories and the removal of the counter display cases on the side. The work was done by Vose and Hannigan, while the decorating and arrangement was done by Olin Smart, one of the employees of Fogg Co.
Attending annual meeting — Miss Evelyn Pearce and Miss Ildafaunce Perry of the Cary Library are in Waterville to attend the annual meeting of the Maine Library Association which is being held there. The library will be closed during their absence.
75 Years Ago – May 20, 1943
Opens barber shop — Delance MacIlroy, who has been employed in the Chester Bates Barber Shop, has assumed the management of the Nixon Barber Shop on Court Street. Allie Graham will be employed in the Bates Barber Shop, Broadway.
Accepts new position — Bertrand Trainer has resigned his position at the Houlton Water Company and accepted the position of sales representative for Maine for the Bay State Milling Company, filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of Paul McGillicuddy.
50 Years Ago – May 15, 1968
Presents $5,000 check — Marshall Hammond, vice-president of the Rotary Club, presented a check for $5,000 to Roger Randall. The check represented the amount of money raised by the Houlton Rotary Club with their annual Radio Auction. Randall accepted the check on behalf of the Southern Aroostook Association for Retarded children, of which he is the president.
Happy Anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carmichael of Littleton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their home when a number of friends and relatives called on them to extend congratulations and best wishes. Mr. and Mrs. Carmichael were married on May 8, 1918, at Woodstock by the Rev. Samuel Howard. They have lived all their married life in Littleton where Mr. Carmichael was engaged in farming.
25 Years Ago – May 19, 1993
First place — The Northern Maine Math League held its final math meet of the academic year at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Each of the 16 middle schools which comprise the league sends three five-student teams to each meet, presenting the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. After two hours of competitive testing, awards are distributed to the top scorers in the individual and team sections. First place winners for the seventh grade from Hodgdon are, Glen Brinkerhoff, Emilia Chabot, Alison Willette, Megan Bishop and Aaron Strange.
Flowers for a year — Patti Hill, secretary of Houlton Water Company, received a bouquet of flowers from Karen Fitzpatrick, owner of Daniels’ Florist. Hill will receive a bouquet of flowers each month for a year as part of winning the fifth annual Daniels’ Florist secretaries promotion.
