101 Years Ago – May 17, 1917
Curb pump — The Presque Isle Garage Company installed a gasoline curb pump in front of their salesroom in the Bolton Block on State Street.
Doctor relocating — Dr. Hull, a graduate of Bates and Harvard Medical and Surgical School and a successful practitioner, relocated to Presque Isle. He leased the front office rooms in the Sidney Graves hardware block, and rented teh E. M. Libby house on the Highlands.
Preparing for the patriotic meeting — A committee from the W. R. C., consisting of M. Annie Grant, Carrie Allen and Mrs. stewart, decorated the Opera House for the patriotic meeting.
75 Years Ago – May 20, 1943
Promotion — Information received here from the Commanding Officer of 203rd F A Battalion indicates the promotion of Aubrey W. Briggs, son of Walter A. Briggs of Presque Isle, Private of Battery, to the rank of Corporal. The Commanding Officer stated that his promotion was based on leadership, ability and attention to duty.
Downing & Son contract — It was announced by the trustees of the Presque Isle Water District that the contract for the building of a concrete mixing chamber at the filter plant had been awarded to the N. W. Downing and Son Company. Construction proceedings on the contract estimated around $12,000. Designed by Metcalf and Eddy, Boston architects, the mixing chamber, twenty feet long and sixteen feet wide, to improve the drinking quality and taste of the water.
50 Years Ago – May 15, 1968
Leadership changes — Ralph A. Brown was elected president and chief executive officer of Maine Public Service Co., replacing C. Hazen Stetson in the executive position who was elected chairman of the board, in the annual organization meeting of the board of directors of the Company in Presque Isle. Stetson replaced Samuel W. Collins of Caribou, who was elected honorary chairman of the board. Both residents of Presque Isle, Brown had formerly held the positions of vice president, secretary and clerk of the Company, while Stetson had been president for 11 years.
Andrews library — The School Administrative District #1 Teachers Association honored retiring Superintendent of Schools Roland B. Andrews and five retiring teachers. It revealed that the new library at Presque Isle High School to be named after Andrews. After eleven years of teaching, Andrews served as superintendent of schools in School Administrative District #1 for thirty-one years. Also receiving recognition at the annual banquet were retiring teachers Marguerite Wieden, Frances Sherrard, Cleo Raymond, Rozilla Roberts, and Marcia Detweiler.
25 Years Ago – May 19, 1993
Girl Scout honor — Pat Rathburn, Presque Isle, and Judy Larson, Ashland, were honored by the Abnaki Girl Scout Council at the organization’s annual meeting on May 8 in Bangor. Rathburn was awarded the Honor Pin and Larson the Appreciation Pin. Both women were service unit managers for Abnaki Girl Scout Council. Sue Beaudet and Gordon Buzza, Presque Isle, were elected to three-year terms on the board of directors of the agency. Beaudet had been a member of the board and was re-elected for a second term. Senior Girl Scout Linette Buzza, Presque Isle, was elected to the Girl Advisory Board, an adjunct to the board of directors to provide the input to teenage members into the deliberations of the board and to teach the girls about how organizations function. At another event, senior Girl Scout Jill Rathburn, Presque Isle, was honored as a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient and a graduating senior. She had completed all the requirements for the highest award in Girl Scouting. Guest speaker was Mary Rose Main, national executive director of Girl Scouts of the USA.
