Recital showcases talents of Houlton School of Dance students

The Houlton School of Dance, directed by Sandy Hartley, held its annual dance recital with performances on May, 9, 10 and 11 at the Houlton High School Auditorium.

Every seat in the house was taken and the program was jam packed with dance routines all three days. The recital opened with the youngest students dancing to “Hey Mr. Banjo” and continued through different age groups, and different dance styles — tap, ballet, and modern.

The themed Act II was all about Alice in Wonderland with Ellen Hatfield dancing the lead accompanied by Bridget Hill as the White Rabbit, Hannah Lee as the Mad Hatter and Kelsey Sewell as the Queen of Hearts. The sets included a dancing table, a birthday cake with a surprise inside and marvelous costumes.

Act III opened with a routine highlighting the seniors of the class of 2018. Music from the 80s and 90s provided the backdrop to the final numbers as the students leapt, tapped, swayed and shimmied through the choreography.

Instructors Sandy Hartley, Sue Waite-York, Kaycee McClure, Katelynn Eastham, Sarah Bouchard, Ellen Hatfield, Hannah Lee, Bethany Tabb and Kelsey Sewell had much to be proud of in the performances of their students.

While exiting the building the audience was abuzz with lingering excitement from watching their favorite young people put on a great show.
