County track championships set for Thursday

Track athletes from around Aroostook County will descend on Caribou High School Thursday (today) at 3:30 p.m. for the Aroostook League Championships. 

Squads from Houlton, Greater Houlton Christian Academy, Presque Isle, Fort Kent, Fort Fairfield, Washburn, Maine School of Science and Mathematics, Madawaska and Hodgdon will join the host Caribou Vikings.

In baseball and softball, Thursday is a relatively quiet day as East Grand travels to Eastport to take on Shead at 4 p.m. Presque Isle hosts Washington Academy for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

In tennis, the Fort Kent boys and girls travel to Presque Isle at 3:30 p.m. and Houlton hosts Caribou in boys and girls action at 4 p.m.

The following is a recap of matches and games played Wednesday.

Tennis

Van Buren boys (5-1) 4, Houlton (3-4) 1 — At Houlton Wednesday, the individual results, with Shires listed first, were: in singles, Nolan Porter lost to Brandon Sytulek, 0-8; Tim Youngfellow lost to Brenton Soucy, 6-8; and Devin Ivey lost to Luc Perrault, 2-8.

In doubles, Jaron Gentle and Isaac Vega lost to Skylar Paradis and Manny Deschaine, 8-9 (8-10 in tiebreaker); and Ben Grant and Nate DeLucca defeated Colby Lapointe and Deacon Thivierge, 8-5.

Houlton girls (4-3) 4, Van Buren (3-3) 1 — At Houlton Wednesday,  the individual results, with Shires listed first, were: in singles, Rebecca Mooers defeated Tiffany Morrow, 8-2; Sydney Lorom beat Erica Ouellette, 8-0; and Maddie Grant bested Emma Lavoie, 8-2.

In doubles, Grace Johnson and Morgan Graham beat Sierra Soucy and Bailey Laplante, 8-5; and Dina Koretsky and Reagan Perfitt lost to Amanda McNair and Emilia McNair 5-8.

Caribou girls (9-0) 5, Presque Isle (6-5) 0 — At Presque Isle, playing a best two-out-of-three set match, the individual results, with Vikings listed first, were: in singles, Gabrielle Marquis defeated Hana Boucher, 6-2, 6-1;  Ashley Matlock beat Miranda Bragan, 6-1, 6-3; and Hailey Holmquist bested Anna Robinson, 6-0,6-2.

In doubles, Maddie Stratton and Ciara Richards defeated Gaby Halley and Jenna Ouellette 6-0, 6-0; and Samantha Tourk and Sage Dubay won by forfeit.

Caribou boys (9-0) 4,  Presque Isle (6-5) 1 — At Presque Isle, the individual results, with Vikings listed first, were: in singles, Parker Deprey beat Andre Daigle, 6-1 6-1; Alec Cyr lost to Mason Young, 0-6, 3-2 (match ended with Cyr forfeiting due to injury); and Gabe Rand beat Jordan Bonville, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, Bailey Griffeth and Sawyer Deprey beat Gage Young and Austin Moreau, 6-1, 6-2; and Emerson Duplissie-Cyr and Sawyer Deprey won by forfeit.

Baseball

Central Aroostook 9, Southern Aroostook 6 — At Central Aroostook Wednesday, the Panthers and Warriors combined for a whopping 29 hits.

Leading Central Aroostook (6-3) were Taylor Campbell and Cody McCrum, each with three hits, while Josh Thomas and Ben Thomas both had two hits.

For Southern Aroostook (4-6), Chris Caswell led the way with four hits, while Gavin Vining added three and Garrett Siltz and Xavier Morales both had two.

Vining went the distance on the mound for SA and recorded five strikeouts with no walks. Brayden Bradbury started and went 3 1/3 before giving way to Thomas. Bradbury gave up nine hits and had five strikeouts, while Thomas gave up six hits, with eight strikeouts.

Greater Houlton Christian Academy 10, Hodgdon  4 — At Hodgdon Wednesday, the Eagles improved to 5-2 on the season with the win over Hodgdon. The Hawks fall to 2-7 on the year. Individual results were not reported.

Fort Kent 5, Presque Isle 1 — At Fort Kent Wednesday, Eden Paradis hit a bases-loaded, two-out double in the bottom of the second inning to give the Warriors a lead they would not relinquish. Paradis also added another hit in the game and pitched the final two innings in relief of starter Josh Soucy, who worked five shutout innings.

Torey Levesque and Dakota Morrow had Presque Isle’s lone hits on the day.

Houlton 2, Caribou 0 ––  At Caribou Wednesday, Houlton (6-2) received a first-inning home run by Keegan Gentle and used the pitching of Nick Perfitt to shut out the Vikings (4-8). Perfitt hurled a five-hiter with five strikeouts and he also singled home a sixth-inning run.

Caribou’s Camden Huck tossed 6 2/3 innings of five-hit, two-run ball, with nine strikeouts. He also had two hits to lead Caribou’s offense.

Fort Fairfield 7, Katahdin 1 — At Fort Fairfield Wednesday, the Tigers improved to 8-2 on the year, while Katahdin dropped to 5-4. Individual results were not reported.

Softball

Houlton 13, Caribou 8 — At Caribou, Wednesday, Aspen Flewelling collected five hits and Kristen Graham had three and drove in a run to lead Houlton (4-4) past the Vikings. Graham also picked up the win inside the pitching circle as she struck out eight.

Alexis Parker went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs for Caribou (4-8).

Katahdin 14, Fort Fairfield 2 — At Fort Fairfield Wednesday, Katahdin (7-3) received a 10-strikeout effort inside the pitching circle from Lily Cullen to beat the Tigers (2-7). Cullen helped her cause with a two doubles and a single.

Lindsay Drew added three doubles and a single, Erin Lake had a double and a single, Jordyn Gardner had a double and a single, Josie Brownlee had a double and Leanne Fitzpatrick, Danielle Libby and Emma McNally each had a single.

For Fort Fairfield, Sara Edgecomb had three strikeouts, while Makaila Beck had a single.

Southern Aroostook 11, Central Aroostook 10 — At Mars Hill Wednesday, the Warriors (10-0) faced their stiffest challenge yet for their undefeated season with the one-run victory over CAHS. (2-7). Individual results were not reported.

Presque Isle 15, Fort Kent 0 — At Fort Kent Wednesday, the Wildcats (3-7) shutout Fort Kent (7-2). Individual results were not reported.
