Tennis season winding down, while Wednesday full of baseball and softball games

The Caribou tennis teams concluded the regular season with 12-0 records after defeating Madawaska in make-up matches played at Caribou High School Tuesday afternoon.

The Viking girls will head into the playoffs ranked No. 1 in Class B North, while the Caribou boys will be the No. 2-ranked squad. Both teams will kick off the post-season by hosting quarterfinal matches to be played May 31 in Caribou, against opponents still to be determined.

The Houlton boys and girls tennis squads will play their final matches of the season Wednesday. Weather permitting, the Shires are scheduled to travel to Madawaska for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.

The final Maine Principals’ Association Heal Point tennis standings will be released by Friday.

On the softball and baseball docket for Wednesday, Hodgdon makes the trip north to Washburn for a softball doubleheader and a single baseball game, with both beginning at 2 p.m. Greater Houlton Christian Academy baseball heads to Danforth for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.; Southern Aroostook baseball and softball are at Katahdin; Ashland baseball and softball are at Wisdom, with the first pitch set for 4 p.m. for those games.

The Central Aroostook at Fort Fairfield games have been called off due to rain and will now be played Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Results of the Caribou tennis matches and the baseball and softball games played involving teams in the region are as follows:

Tennis

Caribou girls (12-0) 5, Madawaska (0-8) 0 — In singles, Gabrielle Marquis (C) won by forfeit, Ashley Matlock (C) won by forfeit and Hailey Holmquist (C) def. Myra Berwick 8-0. In doubles, Madison Stratton-Ciara Richards (C) won by forfeit and Samantha Tourk-Kyra Thibeault (C) def. Hannah Thibeault-Brittany Ouellette 8-1.

Caribou boys (12-0) 5, Madawaska (0-8) 0 — In singles, Parker Deprey (C) def. Ben Hebert 8-0, Gabe Rand (C) def. Lance Lavoie 8-1 and Aidan Plante (C) def. Alex Daigle 8-1. In doubles, Bailey Griffeth-Sawyer Deprey (C) def. Max Gendreau-Andrew Nadeau 8-0 and Emerson Duplissie-Cyr/Seth Beidelman won by forfeit.

Softball

Presque Isle 8, Houlton 0 — The Wildcats have outscored their last four opponents by a margin of 56-3, with the latest lopsided win coming Tuesday on their home field.

Presque Isle broke a scoreless tie by scoring three times in the bottom of the fourth and the team added more late insurance runs in an 8-0 victory over the Shires.

Sydney Thompson continued her outstanding pitching, scattering six hits while striking out 11 for Presque Isle. Savannah Rodriguez paced the offense with a two-run homer along with a double and a single.

Aspen Flewelling led Houlton with two singles to support losing pitcher Kristen Graham, who struck out eight.

Ashland 19, Wisdom 15 — At Ashland, Amber Chasse poked a double and a single with four RBIs and the Hornets scored 10 times in the sixth inning to overcome the Pioneers.

Olivia Tardie hit a double and a single (three RBIs) and Morgan Doughty cranked a two-run home run for Ashland.

Bailey Bellefleur hit two doubles and a single to lead Wisdom of St. Agatha and Emma Chamberland doubled.

Baseball

Ashland 13, Wisdom 0 — Baily Clark and Alex Kaiser pitched a combined two-hitter as host Ashland topped Wisdom.

Kaiser belted a triple, a single and his fifth home run of the season to lead the winning offense. Steven Bellanceau hit a triple and two singles and Clark doubled and singled for the Hornets.

Jacob Roy doubled and Kyle Chamberland singled for Wisdom of St. Agatha.

Houlton 8, Presque Isle 7 — The Shires jumped to an 8-1 lead after five innings, but had to hold off a late charge by the Wildcats, who were playing their first home game of the season.

Houlton senior right-hander Nick Perfitt had a shutout going after four innings and pitched into the sixth inning to earn the victory on the mound. PI scored five times in the sixth and added another in the seventh, but was unable to push the potential tying run across the plate.

Jonah Hudson was tagged with the pitching loss for PI, with Connor DeMerchant providing relief and going the rest of the way.
