PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Caribou girls and Presque Isle boys captured titles in the league championship meet for middle school track and field, held Wednesday at the Johnson Athletic Complex.
The Caribou girls totaled 119 points, which bested runner-up Presque Isle’s 65. Valley Rivers Middle School of Fort Kent took third with 41, while Woodland (17) and Fort Fairfield (eight) followed.
The Wildcat boys posted 91 points to grab top honors in the competition. Caribou was close behind with 83, followed by Fort Fairfield and Valley Rivers, who tied for third with 31. Woodland was fifth with eight points.
Special awards for the top boys and girls scorers in the league championships are presented annually. The top girls scorer was Caribou’s Annalise Jandreau with 30 points. She placed first in the 1,600-meter run in 6 minutes and 6.44 seconds, won the 800 run in 2:46.09 and the 200 dash in 31.12 seconds, and came in second in the high jump by clearing a height of 4 feet, 6 inches.
The remainder of the girls’ top 10 after Jandreau included: Kayley Bell of Caribou (24), Afton Marker of Caribou (19), Salena Savage of Caribou (16), Mikala Libby of Presque Isle (16), Tressa Salch of Caribou (13), Nancy Martin of Valley Rivers (13), Mia Casavant of Presque Isle (9.5), Payten Voisine of Valley Rivers (9.5), Jorja Maynard of Presque Isle (nine) and Gabbie Anderson of Woodland (eight).
Colin Poitras of Caribou was the top boys’ scorer with 26 points. He was the winner of both the 100 hurdles in 17.63 seconds and 400 run in 1:02.97, while also taking second in the 100 in 12.98 and third in the 200 in 27.11.
Following Poitras in the boys’ individual standings were: Hudson Labbe of Valley Rivers (24.5), Sam Cullins of Fort Fairfield (22), Ezra Leach of Presque Isle (18), Ari Plante of Caribou (15), Nicholas Margeson of Caribou (14), Jonah Roy of Presque Isle (12), Cavin Cleaves of Presque Isle (11), Jaron Leach of Presque Isle (11) and Sydney Smith of Presque Isle (10.5).
First-place individual girls’ winners in the meet, along with their times, heights and distances, were: shot put, Savage, 28-9; discus, Marker, 68-3; high jump, Marker, 4-6; long jump, Martin, 12-9.5; 100 hurdles, Voisine, 19.99; 100 dash, Libby, 14.61; 1,600 run , Jandreau; 400 dash, Maynard; and 200 dash, Jandreau.
In the relays, the Valley Rivers team of Shania Morin, Sylvie Morin, Shaye Labonte and Martin won the 4×100 with a time of 1:01.73. Caribou prevailed in the 4×200 as Lauren Craig, Marker, Salch and Marienna St. Peter finished in 2:17.1.
For the boys, capturing event titles were: shot put, Margeson, 36-0; discus, Labbe, 119-5; high jump, Cleaves, 4-8; long jump, Labbe, 17-7.25; 100 dash, Cullins, 12.31; 1,600 run, Plante, 5:36.39; 400 dash, Poitras; 800 run, Ezra Leach, 2:32.1; and 200 dash, Labbe, 26.24.
The 4×100 relay team from Fort Fairfield, made up of Cullins, Alex Oakes, Brendan Osterblom and Justin Pelletier, placed first in 57.06. Presque Isle’s 4×200 relay team of Orion Ouelette, Smith, Evan Chapman and Ezra Leach was the winner in 2:00.44.
