PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The local Delta Chapter of international educator association Delta Kappa Gamma met May 8 at Grant Memorial United Methodist Church in Presque Isle.
The group presented Early Educator Grants to two local teachers.
Irene Fancy, a first-grade teacher at Pine Street Elementary School, won a $500 grant, which she will use to purchase educational games her students will use daily during a SMART Board Center time. This will allow her to provide a new opportunity to support a core value skill.
Sarah Hatt, an elementary special education teacher at SAD 45, won a $250 grant through the generosity of an anonymous donor. Hattt wants to provide a classroom library for her students, introducing new books through a “fine dining” experience where students will get to “taste-test” the new offerings and provide feedback on their experience.
Michaela Tompkins, last year’s grant winner, updated the group on her work with books in her classroom and the innovative ways she is promoting literature.
The chapter inducted new member Michelle Tardif, who is in her first year of teaching grade 4 at Zippel Elementary School.
Members inducted new officers for 2018 -2019, who are: Erin Hoffses, president; Carrie Reed, vice president; Debbie Wright, secretary; and Janet Woods, corresponding secretary.
The meeting concluded with a baby shower for outgoing president Melissa Buck.
