WASHBURN, Maine — Washburn District High School Principal Melanie Blais recently announced the honor parts for the Class of 2018, who participated in the school’s graduation on June 7.
Macey Barker was the class valedictorian, with Devon Maynard as salutatorian, Emma Cyr as first honor essayist and Abby Conroy as second honor essayist.
Barker is the daughter of Michael Barker and Amy Joy Berube. She has been president of Washburn’s chapter of the National Honor Society and a member of the volleyball team as well as captain. This year she received the Principal’s Award through the Maine Principals Association, as well as the Aroostook Scholar Athlete Award.
In her junior year, Barker received the Phi Beta Kappa award recognizing intellectual curiosity and achievement, and was selected as Presque Isle Regional Career and Technology Center’s Student of the Quarter. She has maintained highest honors in every high school course she has taken, as well as a 4.0 in all her early college coursework.
Barker has participated in soccer, basketball, softball and volleyball, where she was named captain and most valuable player for 2017. She has been a member of the varsity club all four years. She has been involved in every aspect of student government and was the senior class president. She also participated in the gifted and talented program for art, and was chosen a Student of the Month each year at WDHS.
She plans to attend Bowdoin in the fall.
Maynard is the son of Jennie Bouchard. He has earned honor roll placement all through high school and has taken top honors in junior honors English and American Studies.
Maynard has also been recognized for many athletic achievements. He qualified for states in cross country his first three years running, and qualified for states in the 400 meters. He received the Coach’s Award in both soccer and cross-country, and earned the Dick Hartford Award recognizing outstanding dedication to the sport.
During his senior year, he received the Most Valuable Player award for soccer.
He plans to attend University of Maine at Presque Isle in the fall and pursue a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies.
Cyr is the daughter of Blossom and Matt Cyr and Matt Baker. She was vice president of the senior class and has participated in student government. She has achieved high honors and also received the English Award her junior year.
During her senior year, she contributed as editor to the yearbook.
Cyr participated in the health and medical sciences program through Caribou Career and Technology Center her junior year.
She plans to attend Northern Maine Community College in the fall to study nursing.
Conroy, the daughter of Stephen and Denise Conroy, has been on the honor roll all throughout high school. In August, she was selected by the faculty for Student of the Month.
She has participated in cheering during her freshman and sophomore years, as well as the civil rights team. She has been a teacher aide for two years and has also attended the food service program at Caribou Career and Technology Center.
