CARIBOU, Maine — Sons and daughters on a budget, scrambling at the last minute in search of the perfect Father’s Day gift, may want to consider taking dad fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, or golfing in Caribou.
Caribou Parks and Recreation Superintendent Gary Marquis said the city has plenty of offerings well-suited for Father’s Day, including 11.3 miles of railbed trails across the town that are excellent for walking, biking, and hiking.
Additionally, there are tennis courts across the street from the Caribou Wellness and Recreation center on Bennett Drive, which Marquis said would make for a fun activity with dad.
For Father’s Day, Marquis specifically recommends fishing in the Aroostook River.
“My God, the Aroostook River is just teeming with great fishing opportunities,” he said, “and it’s right in our back yard.”
He added that “Forbes pit” on the Fort Road is an excellent fishing hole, but “any of the small brooks” in town should have a good amount of brook trout.
While the recreation department is not holding any events specifically tailored to Father’s Day over the weekend, Marquis said that, in addition to fishing, the Aroostook River is a great place for a kayak or canoe outing.
Collins Pond, which can be found on Caribou Street, has a basketball court and picnic area, and Marquis said it offers a plethora of “birding opportunities,” as it typically attracts plenty of water fowl.
He added that a boat launch off Lower Lyndon street across from Sleeper’s is great for both fishing or boating.
While the aforementioned suggestions are great for both literally and figuratively creating priceless Father’s Day memories, Marquis said the Caribou and Limestone country clubs could provide a good experience as well.
“Golfing is a great activity with your kids,” he said. “It’s a good, lifelong sport, once you learn to master it.”
Marquis said “there is no lack” of great family-oriented opportunities, many of which are free, in and around Caribou.
“There’s more than enough to do in and around Caribou to keep anyone busy,” he said.
