FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Federal investigators have charged an Aroostook County man with two felony sex crimes following a multi-agency investigation.
Police charged Kyle Sirois, 26, of Madawaska with possession of child pornography and transportation of child pornography, according to an affidavit filed on June 6 in U.S. District Court in Bangor.
Investigators acted on a tip received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that a child pornography video was broadcast to an electronic service provider from a certain internet address in Fort Fairfield on October 2017, according to Daniel Yon, a special agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement , Homeland Security Investigations.
In his affidavit, Yon reported learning that Sirois had been staying at his girlfriend’s place in Fort Fairfield when not working on the road as a long-haul trucker.
With the help of the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit, investigators determined that Sirois had been using his laptop and his girlfriend’s IP address to commit the alleged crimes.
When officers went to the Fort Fairfield residence to execute a search warrant in January 2018, Sirois answered the door, according to Yon, and told police that he had been staying at the residence for approximately the last six months when he was not trucking.
In a subsequent interview with police, Sirois explained that he had a “problem with child pornography, but that he had never touched anybody,” according to the affidavit. He advised investigators that he collected child pornography and posted some online to chat websites so that he “could see people’s reactions.”
He also told investigators that they would find child pornography on his laptop computer located in his semi truck. Officers obtained the Lenovo laptop and a cell phone, and during a forensic preview, discovered hundreds of files and file names indicative of child pornography, Yon reported.
Yon added that during a further forensic examination of the computer, 3,570 image files and 399 video files of suspected child pornography were located on the hard drive of the device. Several videos featured nude men and young girls under the age of 10 engaged in sex acts. An image of Sirois in his U.S. Army uniform and his resume also were found on the laptop.
If convicted on the charges, Sirois faces between 5 years and 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both. He could be put on probation for between five years and the rest of his life.
An attorney for Sirois was not listed in court documents.
