Making a splash

Hooray — our new splash pad is finally open. We have had a lot of excitement and many inquiries about this great addition to our community, and I thought I would share our more common questions and our answers to them.

What is a splash pad and how does it work?

A splash pad is a zero-depth, interactive water play area. Users activate the spray features by pressing one of the activation buttons. Once pressed a sequence of features will spray for four minutes. When the time is up, an activator must be pressed once again to begin a new sequence for another four minutes. Repeat.

Where does the water come from?

The water comes from the 3,000 gallon storage tank in the Riverside building. The water is chlorinated, pumped out to the play features and recirculated back to the storage tank.

When is the splash pad open and how much does it cost?

The splash pad is operational beginning at 9 a.m. each day and ends each evening at dusk. The splash pad is free and open to the public. Next to the pad, our Snack Shack will be open tentatively from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What ages are allowed?

All ages are welcome. This area is not supervised and use is at your own risk. Parents/guardians are responsible for child supervision.

Where do I park?

There are three locations for parking. One is the Riverside parking lot, the second is the Sargent Family Community Center parking lot, with the third option for parking being adjacent to the Farmers Market Pavilion.

Are there any rules?

Of course there are rules. Those rules are posted next to the splash pad. By following the rules and using a little common sense, everyone can safely enjoy the new splash pad.

What is going on down there next to the Splash Pad?

That is the construction of the new playground. Please be cautious and safely avoid the marked-off areas so that project can continue while the Splash Pad is in use. That project will last through the summer.

Can I bring my pet?

No animals are allowed on the pad.

Can I access the pad with my wheelchair?

Yes, the pad is zero-entry and handicapped accessible.

What is your weather policy?

The splash pad is closed during inclement weather. If thunder or lightning occurs, all users must vacate the splash pad for a minimum of 30 minutes and until the weather is clear.

Where can I sit and watch without getting wet?

We have a plan for benches and picnic tables throughout the area, but have yet to acquire all of the funds to purchase them. If you would like to help, please reach out to us. In the meantime, feel free to bring a beach chair.

How many people can play at once?

As safety allows, but it is sized for as many as 150 people at one time.

What if I am there and not having fun?

Go see a doctor (insert funny face here).

Hopefully this little Q-and-A has helped. If anyone has other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 764-2545 or email at cbeaulieu@presqueisleme.us. Enjoy the summer!
