A few folks have noticed that the building that the Houlton Pioneer Times calls home is up for sale. Understandably, people have been asking questions.
First, let me state the Houlton Pioneer Times is staying in Houlton. It’s our local news outlet, and it is the only organization that has shouldered the mantle of recording our community’s history as it happens. The people of Houlton and the surrounding towns support the local paper, and we accept that support as our responsibility to honor with our journalism.
In fact, as the landscape in local independent journalism changes, we have been expanding our approach by adopting innovative approaches to our craft. We have increased our presence online with TheCounty.ME website, are offering new ways to advertise across different mediums and continue to explore new ways to provide timely, accurate and useful news to our readers.
We remain focused on our core mission.
The title and role of landlord is not part of that mission.
The building we currently occupy has been the base of operations of the Pioneer Times for 101 years. But the truth is that we call Houlton our home, regardless of which building in the town we unlock every morning.
Once we have sold the building, we’ll see what the new owners have planned. We may continue to stay as tenants and move along without any other interruption. If necessary, we can move to another building in town.
As long as people show the enthusiastic support for this paper upon which we all rely, each of us for different and important reasons, then we will be here to report the news, promote business and serve the interests of our region.
