HOULTON, Maine — Law enforcement officials with the Houlton Police Department, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Border Patrol are searching for a stolen vehicle believed to be headed south on U.S. Route 1 Thursday afternoon.
Houlton Police Chief Tim DeLuca said he could not give many details on the search as he was actively involved in setting up areas to capture the suspect. However, he did say police were looking for an individual who is believed to have stolen a vehicle from a Houlton residence and driven it to Machias before discarding it.
The suspect then reportedly stole a pickup truck from that area and drove to Presque Isle sometime Thursday. That vehicle was described as a red 2005 Chevrolet 1500 that had been spray painted black, with Maine license plate number 4965UC. The original red paint is still visible in places on the vehicle, according to the chief.
By mid-afternoon, police believed the individual was headed south on U.S. Route 1 and were coordinating with the other agencies to set up checkpoints. The vehicle was not located after two hours had passed, so the immediate search was called off.
The chief advised members of the public not to approach the vehicle but to call 911 and report its whereabouts if spotted.
