HOULTON, Maine — It is good to be back in the County. I would like to thank Ray Mailman for writing the column while I was away. This has been a great week at the course. Warm weather and the very welcome rains have really helped. I can’t believe how much greener the fairways have become.
This past Wednesday we hosted 120 members of the Sf. John Valley Senior Men’s League. Everything went smoothly for the two different flights with 4.5 hour rounds. After playing they were all treated to a wonderful dinner by the Lakeside Restaurant. Local winners were Jerry York, Sean Dolomont, Mike Fleming, Richie Flowers, and Scott Flannery. Congratulations to all. A big wish of appreciation to volunteers Vaughn Putnam, Rheta Vega, Nick Brewer, Wyatt Harvey, and Isaac Vega without whose help this tournament would not have run so smoothly. Thank you.
Sunday we had 48 players for our GFL/ Member Scramble. The team of Tammy and Doug Griffin, and Harriet and Bob Gray won the event shooting a six under par 30. Two teams were tied at 32. The Lincoln clan, Brent and Theresa, Casey, and Morgan, and Karen and PeeWee Gallup, Merrill Levian, and Pam Mailman. Light hors d’oeuvres from Chef Bill and Nancy were enjoyed afterwards. Look for another Couples Scramble coming on Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. All players are welcome.
The Men’s Twilight League McIlroy division tightened up extremely thanks to a shocking upset by Ryan Brewer and Kevin Cartin. Bob Gray and Jerry York have only a slim one point lead over Sean Dolomont and Rick Goodwin and Dick York and Paul Adams. In the Spieth division, it looks like Tony Marino and Bruce Avery are starting to pull away with a 7.5 point lead. The Ladies Association will have a Scramble and potluck starting at five. Call the proshop ASAP to put your name on the list so we can get a headcount to make up foursomes.
Coming in August, the County Open will be played on Aug. 11 at Houlton. The Scramble will be held in Island Falls on Aug. 12. Sign up soon and let’s make this one of the largest fields in in recent history. The Club Championship will be held the weekend of Aug. 25 and 26. It is open to all members with multiple divisions based on numbers playing. Members should plan now to put their team in the Babe Caron Memorial Tournament on Labor Day weekend. The field will be limited to 30 two man teams to keep playing time down. Call the Clubhouse for more info on any of these events.
And speaking of events, Friday night was a huge success at the Lakeside Restaurant with Paul LaPointe performing for your pleasure. Nancy and Bill will be serving delicious meals from Wed.- Sun. for lunch and dinner. Call Nancy at 694-9494 for reservations.
Finally, keep an eye out for news in your email about a couple projects that will be coming to our course soon. Come out and play a few holes this week. We’ll see you on the course.
