Chloe Lento, 10, from Girl Scout Troop 691 of Easton and Presque Isle, worked hard through the hot weather last week to achieve her Girl Scout Bronze Award.
This award is the first in a set of three prestigious community service awards that can be achieved by a Girl Scout. Junior Girl Scouts, in grades 4 and 5, can earn the Bronze Awards. Cadettes, in grades 6-8, can earn the Silver Award, while the Gold Award, the equivalent to the Boy Scout Eagle Award, is for high school-age Girl Scouts.
In order to earn the Bronze Award, Junior Girl Scouts must first look for an issue in their community that needs to be addressed. Chloe wanted to work with the Sister Mary O’Donnell Emergency Homeless Shelter because she knew a little girl that once had to use their services. Not knowing exactly what they could use her help with, she made appointments and met with a couple of representatives from the shelter. She was pleased to learn that she could give the children’s playroom a fresh new look.
She knew it was a big project and would need some help so she put together a small crew that included her mom, dad and grandmother. Then, she came up with a design plan and a list of materials she would need to complete her project.
Wanting to get the project done quickly, and knowing she could not afford the painting supplies on her own, she set out to ask for some donations. A local lumber company generously donated the paint and supplies. Once the project got underway, Chloe realized that the window in the room had a broken shade and she wanted to fix that, too. Lowe’s was happy to donate a new one.
Chloe’s design included light blue walls, white trim and a sky theme. The walls boast brightly colored pictures of a rainbow, kites, hot air balloons and the very top of a tree. From her own home she donated a large whiteboard and markers to make up for covering up areas of chalkboard paint. The project took her five days and over 20 hours, but was well worth it. The new look is bright, calming and welcoming.
As she enters the sixth grade and bridges up to a Cadette Girl Scout, she is looking forward to working on her Silver Award. She is excited to continue volunteering for the shelter and would like to find an even bigger project to devote to her next award.
