CARIBOU, Maine — McGillan, Inc. of Fort Fairfield has moved some heavy equipment onto the former Bird’s Eye vegetable processing plant site on Route 1, and is scheduled to finish demolition of the buildings by late August or early September.
The city contracted with McGillan and plans to have demolition completed in time for the September BikeMaine 2018 event, when some 450 people are expected to cycle across northern Aroostook, according to Caribou Zoning Administrator Ken Murchison.
The city acquired the 18-acre site in 2016 after the former owner refused to pay back taxes. In August that year, the city demolished a freezer building and guard shack on the property because officials deemed the two structures posed significant danger to motorists as they could potentially collapse and fall onto Route 1.
While asbestos abatement may set the completion date back a bit, city manager Dennis Marker said the city should “still be close to that date for having the buildings down.”
