PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A total of 70 girls between the ages of 9 and 15 attended the Aroostook Basketball Camp July 9-13 at Presque Isle High School.
Held for the 20th year, the camp was directed by Bill and Chris Casavant. This year’s staff included former Washburn coach Larry Worcester, former UMFK coach Eric Werntgen and current high school coaches Jeff Hudson (Presque Isle), Dillon Kingsbury (Central Aroostook), and Cliff Urquhart (Southern Aroostook).
Daily, the players took part in intensive drills in all phases of the game, played two league games, and competed in 1-on-1 and 3-on-3 contests.
“As always, our staff is dedicated to teaching youngsters the fundamentals of the game as well as game strategies, along with teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship,” said Chris Casavant. “These values have not changed since the inception of the camp and every player receives the same instruction, regardless of age or ability.”
Awards were presented on the final day for team and individual excellence. All-star selections and league champions were recognized as well as division MVPs, most improved players, best defensive players, coaches award recipients, 1-on-1 champions, 3-on-3 champions and foul shooting champions.
Members of the high school division all-star teams were: Liv Adams, Phoebe Foss, Amelia Godin, Ainsley Caron, Izzy Cowger, Grace Ellis, Olivia Locke, Logan Stedt, Jorja Maynard, Julia Cyr, Maddie Morneault and Reese McPherson.
The Warriors were the high school division league champions. Team members were: Logan Stedt, Amelia Godin, Julia Cyr, Abby Haines, Rhylie Pierce, Haley Mayne, Carrlyn Buck, Avery Werntgen, Taylor Watson, Lenora Curtis and Kaylie Harris.
Special awards for the high school division were as follows: 1-on-1 champion, Julia Cyr; foul shooting champion, Amelia Godin; coaches award winner, Carrlyn Buck; Most Improved Player, Ella Hall-Michaud; Best Defense, Julia Cyr; and 3-on-3 champions, Olivia Locke, Maddie Cowger, Haley Mayne and Blayne Tardif.
College division all-stars were: Eva Callioras, Raegyn Chavez, Meg Casavant, Madison Russell, Kira Fitzherbert, Anna Jandreau, Hanna Lovely, Rhylee Kinney, Cami Shields, Hattie Bubar, Maddie Shields and Rossalyn Buck.
UConn won the college division title. The roster included Kira Fitzherbert, Madison Russell, Hattie Bubar, Mia Casavant, Madison Shields, Mackenna Berube, Phoebe Solomon and Sidney Lavigne.
Special awards for the college division went to the following: 1-on-1 champion, Meg Casavant; foul shooting champion, Anna Jandreau; coaches award winner, Hattie Bubar; Most Improved Player, Cami Shields; Best Defense, Madison Russell; and 3-on-3 champions, Anna Jandreau, Eva Callioras and Phoebe Solomon.
The high school division MVP was Jorja Maynard of Presque Isle and the college division MVP was Madison Russell of Oakfield.
