The most accomplished wrestler ever to compete at Caribou High School will garner a prestigious honor Saturday when he is inducted into the Maine Amateur Wrestling Alliance Hall of Fame.
Carlin Dubay, who graduated from CHS in 2008, also competed in soccer and track and field for the Vikings, but it was on the wrestling mat where he piled up numerous accomplishments.
Dubay is one of only 13 wrestlers in Maine to capture a New England title. His coach, Todd Albert, said Dubay was an athlete who hated to lose and was always mentally and physically prepared, which made him easy to coach.
“He always respected our coaching strategy and would often be bumped up a weight class to face tougher competition, and that made him better,” Albert said. “Carlin never took a day off for being sick and I don’t think he was ever injured.”
Albert said Dubay became a great leg wrestler and his technique improved every year.
Dubay, who recently relocated to Aroostook County and currently resides in Fort Fairfield, was a four-year wrestler at Caribou High School. He finished with an overall record of 162-12 and lost a total of four matches his final three seasons, winning Class B state titles in the 103-pound weight division all three years.
He capped his senior season, in which he went 54-0, by competing in the National High School Coaches Association Senior National Wrestling Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He appeared in Sports Illustrated magazine twice as a senior.
Friday’s ceremony will be held at Hyde School in Bath. He will join three other inductees — Terry Devereaux of Belfast, Chris Smith of Deering in Portland and Dave Giroux of Rumford.
