DR. EUN-KYUNG HONG YORK, PA – Dr. Eun-Kyung Hong passed away quietly Saturday evening, August 4, 2018, at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy. Her illness was swift and unexpected. Her loving family surrounded her at the time of her passing.
She is survived by her husband, Hae-Cheol Kim; her daughter, Hanni Kim; and pets Squeak and Spot. Her sister, Hee-Kyung Hong, preceded her in death. Other surviving family includes her father, Doo-Pyo Hong; mother, Young-Ae Moon; sisters, Chae-Hee, Chae-Hong, and Seung-Jin; brother Sung Joon; mother-in-law Dugim Choi; brothers-in-law, Young-Sik Kim , Yang-Joon Kim, Young-Gul Kim, and Incheon Kim; sister-in-law, Brenda Jung; nephew, Seung-Hyun Nam; nieces, Seung-Min Nam, Lian Hong and Liyeon Hong; brother-in-law, Ki-ll Nam. Her family will miss her terribly.
Dr. Hong, originally from South Korea, came to the United States to further her practice of medicine. She finished her medical studies at Korea University and completed internship and residency for Family Practice at Hyundai Joong-Ang Hospital. She had a general medicine practice in Seoul, Korea. She then embraced the study of Obstetrics and Gynecology with an internship at Honolulu’s Kapiolani Hospital through the University of Hawaii. She completed her OB/GYN residency at Baystate Hospital in Springfield, Massachusetts through Tufts Univeristy. Her first OB/GYN practice was in Houlton, Maine at Houlton OB/GYN. To this day, patients still ask for her there. She joined WellSpan OB/GYN in York, in December of 2014, and quickly became an integral part of that practice. A highly respected and beloved physician, she was well known for her kind heart and commitment to her family, colleagues, staff, and patients. During her illness, she worried about her patients and regretted that she could not be there to care for them. Her patients remained a top priority for her up until the time of her passing.
Dr. Hong loved spending time with her family traveling and experimenting with different types of food, although she would be the first to admit that she was a horrible cook. Her daughter was the light of her life and inherited her mother’s love and respect for foods of different cultures. Eun loved music, nature and flowers, and experienced true joy at other’s accomplishments and successes.
A memorial service was held at 6:30 PM Thursday, August 9, 2018, at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, Pennsylvania, with The Rev. Carl Tancredi officiating.
