MARS HILL, Maine — Forty-two individuals ranging in age from 17 to 69 completed the inaugural Big Run Around the Mountain Half Marathon on Sunday, Aug. 12.
The event was held at Bigrock Ski Area and sponsored by The Aroostook Medical Center.
The winning time was turned in by Thomas Wire of New Limerick, a 34-year-old who completed the 13.1-mile course in 1 hour, 28 minutes and 7 seconds.
He finished 4:05 ahead of Jacob Boone. The 28-year-old from Old Town turned in a time of 1:32:12. Third place went to 21-year-old Matthew Forshey of Fort Kent, whose time was 1:34:41.
Katie Malone, a 35-year-old from Caribou, was the first female finisher and was fourth overall in 1:41:19.
The remainder of the overall top 10 included Dale DeMerchant of Clearview, New Brunswick (fifth, 1:46), Dean Patten of Caribou (sixth, 1:46:31), Rebecca St. John of Presque Isle (seventh, 1:48:50), Stephen Hopkins of Caribou (eighth, 1:49:46), Andy Grass of Blaine (1:49:49) and Jaylee Fox of Mapleton (1:50:12).
Racers from as far away as Kennebunk, South Portland, Portland and West Gardiner participated.
Plans are underway for the second annual event, which is set for Aug. 11, 2019.
