HOULTON, Maine — Individuals interested in serving on the Houlton Town Council, RSU 29 board of directors and several other town boards are encouraged to take out nomination papers at the town office.
According to Town Clerk Cathy O’Leary, nomination papers are available at the Houlton Town Office, located at 21 Water St. Individuals must obtain at least 72 signatures from registered voters in Houlton. Forms must be returned to the town office no later than 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10.
Two seats are up for grabs on the Houlton Town Council, while five seats are available on the RSU 29 board of directors.
For the town council, the terms of councilors Sue Waite-York and Rosa McNally are expiring. McNally stated Tuesday afternoon that she did not plan to seek re-election to the board. Attempts to reach Waite-York were not successful.
For RSU 29, five seats are available — three three-year terms, one two-year term and one one-year term. Currently, the three-year seats are held by Tammy Goetsch, Bruce Clark and Lori Holmes.
The other two seats are presently filled by Jessica Milligan and Ellen Askren, who were appointed to the board by the town council to fill vacancies.
Five seats are also available on the town’s Board of Budget Review (3 three-year terms, 1 two-year seat and 1 one-year seat). This board is charged with reviewing the proposed municipal budget and making recommendations to the Town Council.
In addition, two, three-year seats are available on the Board of Directors for the Houlton Water Company and one five-year seat on the Cary Library Board of Trustees is open.
Registered voters of the town of Houlton can be considered as a valid write-in candidate for any position on the municipal ballot by declaring their candidacy by Sept. 24. A write-in candidate is a person whose name is not printed on the ballot, but otherwise fulfills the qualifications for the office they designate. The required forms are available at the Town Office, 21 Water Street, during normal business hours.
