100 Years Ago – Aug. 21, 1918
New Assistant — The appointment of Burns McIntyre as Assistant Postmaster, which was made July 1 and approved by the department, was, after careful consideration, accepted by Mr. McIntyre on Aug. 16, who assumed his duties on that day. This appointment is a tribute to Mr. McIntyre’s faithful service covering a period of 14 years, being among the first to enter service under the civil service examination, and during all these years he has proven a faithful and most obliging employee and his promotion to assistant postmaster will meet with hearty approval by the many patrons of the Houlton office. Several changes are made necessary by this promotion; Vernon Saunders will be window clerk and Roy McQuade will do the parcel post work.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 26, 1943
Sold — The Mahoney Potato House at New Limerick was sold last week through the J. R. Harvey Co., to Ward C. Hand of New Limerick.
Employed — Dorothy Patterson arrived Monday for a week’s vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Olanda Patterson. On her return she will be accompanied by her sister, Hope, and both will be employed on the staff of the Reader’s Digest.
50 Years Ago – Aug. 21, 1968
Celebrates birthday — A pleasant day was enjoyed by friends and relatives of Mrs. Sadie Smith who celebrated her 102nd birthday August 10. She was presented with a basket cake by Mrs. Hilda Ramsey and Mrs. Jennie Crabbe and she also received many cards and gifts. Mrs. Smith enjoys good health and occasionally goes for a walk to visit with a neighbor, Mrs. Etta Ramsey. Among her callers were Mrs. Martha Barton of Fredericton, who is her last living first cousin, and Mrs. Barton’s two sons and a daughter from her niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. John Burlock.
Prize winner — Ray Brown received ownership papers for a complete set of patio-lawn furniture from Walter Burlock with Frank Dunn looking on. Brown was the winner of the set given as a door prize by the Houlton Lodge of Elks.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 25, 1993
King and Queen — Crowned as the 1993 Peanut Carnival King and Queen were Jimmy Hogan and Eva Putnam. Jimmy is the son of Jim and Karen Hogan and Eva is the daughter of Orrin and Deloris Putnam. The Peanut Carnival and Parade are sponsored by the Houlton Parks and Recreation Department.
Oldest Littleton resident — Ruth McCordic has acquired the Ross Cane for being the oldest resident of Littleton. Ruth is 93 years of age and is still able to stay home alone in her own home. The Ross Cane replaced the Boston Post gold-headed cane lost in a fire. Edward A. Grozier, publisher of the now defunct Boston Post, gave out 400 gold-headed canes to senior citizens in 1909.
