Four soccer games and a golf match make up the entirety of the local varsity sports schedule for Monday.
The Hodgdon Hawks open their campaign by making the trip to Washburn to take on the Beavers. Both the girls and boys games begin at 4 p.m.
Katahdin also begins regular season play with the long trip north to Fort Kent. The boys game will be played first and begins at 4 p.m. The girls game follows at 6 p.m.
In golf, the first countable match for both Hodgdon and Central Aroostook takes place at Mars Hill Country Club beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Results of soccer matches played Friday and Saturday which involved local soccer squads are as follows:
Central Aroostook girls 2, Madawaska 1 — Kayla Martin broke a tie game with a goal late in the second half, helping the Panthers (4-0) stay undefeated with a hard-fought win at Madawaska Friday.
The Owls scored the first goal of the match, but CA’s Olivia Pelletier tied it by hitting a long shot which caromed off the bottom of the cross bar.
“Madawaska is a quick start team and delivers quite a punch early on, but I just told the girls we had to weather the first 10 minutes and go from there,” said Panther coach Joe Levesque. “[Olivia’s goal] seemed to rejuvenate and sustain us until the second half.”
The coach gave members of the boys team part of the credit for Martin’s game winner.
“Deep in the second half we struggled to get the ball to midfield, but I could hear our boys team cheering loudly in an attempt to pick us up,” Levesque said. “It worked and gave the girls the lift they needed. I told the boys on the bus after they deserved the assist on Kayla’s goal.”
Central Aroostook boys 4, Madawaska 1 — The Panther boys are also 4-0 following Friday’s victory on the Owls’ home field.
The game was tied at 1-1 before the Panthers scored three unanswered goals the rest of the way. Hunter Wardwell ended up with the hat trick and Bryan Anthony scored on a header off a Josh Thomas assist to account for CA’s offense. Ben Thomas recorded an assist.
Tristan Cyr’s header off Dominic Lagasse’s assist, which came midway through the first half, was the first goal allowed by the Panthers all season.
“Madawaska was a tough team, but I believe we played them well,” said CA coach Wallace Endy. “My defense played well and they are improving every day. Sometimes defense gets overlooked because of scoring stats, but it is more or equally important to winning games.”
Brayden Bradbury made two saves on five shots in goal for the Panthers. The Owls’ goalkeeper, Andrew Nadeau, faced 17 shots and collected seven saves.
Wisdom boys 4, Easton 3 — The Pioneers improved to 2-1 as Carter Pelletier’s penalty kick midway through the second half was the difference at St. Agatha.
The six other goals were scored in the first half. Isaac Currier had two and Mitchell Flewelling the other for the 1-2 Bears. Kooper Kinney assisted on both of Currier’s tallies.
Pelletier, Corey Franck and Jake Roy were other goals scorers for Wisdom.
Kody Carter saved four of 10 shots for Easton and Trevor Couture seven of 17 for Wisdom.
“We didn’t move and possess the ball the way we are capable of,” said Easton coach Ryan Shaw, who noted Currier left the game with a leg injury in the second half and the Bears struggled following his departure.
Wisdom girls 7, Easton 1 — The Wisdom girls won for the second time in three outings, easily handling the Bears (0-3) in St. Agatha Friday afternoon. Game details were not reported.
Fort Fairfield boys 2, Ashland 1 — The Tigers (2-2) prevailed as Alex Oakes headed in the game-winner with 4:23 left in the first overtime during Saturday’s match played in Fort Fairfield.
Dawson Watson scored an unassisted goal to put Fort Fairfield in front early before Dylan Haley of Ashland tied it with his own unassisted tally.
Kobe West made nine saves on 18 shots for the winners, while Garret Tilley saved eight of 22 for Ashland.
“I thought we established our offensive attacks early, won 50-50 balls and possessed the ball on the ground as Ashland had a size advantage over us,” said Fort Fairfield coach Cody Tompkins. “Our keeper and young defense played well and the team continues to improve in a lot of areas.”
Ashland girls 8, Fort Fairfield 2 — Shelby Stolze broke free for three first-half goals as the Hornets bested the Tigers Saturday in Fort Fairfield.
Eighth-grader Kayla McLean scored her first career goal. Gabby Ayotte, Kassandra Nelson, Danni Carter and Mia Carney were the other goal scorers for Ashland, which improved to 2-1. Valerie Burby saved five of seven shots in goal for the Hornets.
Freshman Camryn Ala netted both Fort Fairfield goals. The Tigers’ record dropped to 1-3.
Washburn girls 6, Van Buren 0 — The Beavers (1-3) managed their first win of the season Saturday in Van Buren, thanks to a hat trick and a pair of assists by senior Kassie Farley.
Madison Miller struck for two goals and an assist and Tru Drost collected the Beavers’ other goal. Trinity Saucier saved all four shots she faced for the shutout.
“This win was a combined effort between the offense and the defense,” said Washburn coach Marcie Barbarula. “They were aggressive, they were communicating and in this game, their passing was the best I have see this season.”
Bailey LaPlante and Tiffany Morrow combined for seven saves on 28 shots for Van Buren, which was playing in its first game this season.
Van Buren boys 8, Washburn 1 — The Crusaders won big in their home opener Saturday. The Beavers are now 0-4. Game details were not reported.
