MARS HILL, Maine — The Central Aroostook Panthers featured the two golfers who posted the lowest scores, but the Ashland Hornets’ depth gave them the team victory in the mutual regular season opening match played Monday at Mars Hill Country Club.

Will Durost and Stetson Nicholas led the way for the hosts. Durost, a freshman, shot a 44 to capture medalist honors and Nicholas was only a stroke back with a 45. But the Hornets’ third, fourth and fifth golfers outscored their Panther counterparts to give Ashland a 6.5-4.5 victory in match play.

Graham Berry carded a 50 to pace the Hornets. Teammate Sean Montpetit had a 56 on the afternoon. Tristan Pelletier shot a 59 and Jack Routhier and Alden Routhier both were in the 60s for Ashland.

Taia Tilley, Nate Hawksley and Devin Dionne were the other competitors for Central Aroostook.

The Aroostook League consists of only three teams this season. In addition to CA and Ashland, Hodgdon is the other school fielding a squad.

The Panthers take on Hodgdon Thursday at Houlton Community Golf Course. The match begins at 3:30 p.m.

Ashland does not play another match until Sept. 7. The Hornets will host Hodgdon at Portage Hills Country Club at 3:30 p.m.
