Three former Ashland girls’ varsity soccer standouts are on the roster of the University of Maine at Machias Clippers, who are in Presque Isle to take on the UMPI Owls Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Amber Chasse, Morgan Doughty and Megan Cote were all part of successful teams at Ashland that earned state titles in 2014 and 2016. All three graduated this past June and are now freshmen at the Washington County-based university.
Chasse and Doughty, who are first cousins, were offensive threats in high school, especially during a senior season when they combined for 64 goals. Doughty accumulated 33 goals and 24 assists and Chasse 31 goals and 23 assists in 2017. Cote was a four-year starter at goalkeeper under head coach Peter Belskis, garnering 40 shutouts during her career.
The Hornets advanced to the state championship all four years.
Doughty started all four years, while Chasse missed a majority of her first three seasons with the Hornets, having suffered multiple ACL injuries.
In two matches with UM-Machias this season, Chasse, a midfielder, already has four goals and three assists and Doughty, a forward/midfielder, has two goals and an assist. Cote started in goal against UMPI on Saturday, Sept. 2, and recorded nine saves in the 7-1 victory. She plays defense when not in goal.
The Clippers, who are coached by BJ Marshall, opened the season with a 4-1 victory over Central Maine Community College on Aug. 31.
