Courtney Gilbert, 11, from Girl Scout Troop 691 of Easton and Presque Isle, worked hard these past few weeks to achieve her Girl Scout Bronze Award.
The Bronze Award is the first award in a set of three prestigious awards that can be achieved by a Girl Scout. It is a community service award that can be earned by a Junior Girl Scout. Junior Girl Scouts are in the 4th and 5th grades. The other two awards are the Silver Award for Cadette Girl Scouts in grades 6-8, and the Gold Award (which is the equivalent to the Boy Scout Eagle) can be earned by high school age Girl Scouts.

To earn the Bronze Award, Scouts must first look for an issue in their community that needs to be addressed. Courtney loves the Peace Park here in Easton. She has worked with Troop 691 to restore it and keep it beautiful, but she knew it was missing something. People needed a nice place to enjoy the park. It needed a picnic table, and she was going to build one.
She didn’t have the money to purchase all the supplies she would need, so she went to Lowe’s, where she explained what she was doing, and they were happy to help her get started.
She had never built a table before, but with the help of her dad, she learned to use power tools to put it together. Then she stained and sealed it to keep it beautiful.
This past Sunday evening, with a small audience, Courtney placed the table in the park. She would like to invite everyone to enjoy the new picnic table.
Peace Park is on the corner of Center and Frypan roads. It’s a small park with lots of flowers, a peace pole, a bridge, a memorial bench and, now, a picnic table.
As she enters the sixth grade and bridges up to a Cadette, Courtney is looking forward to working on her Silver Award. She has a big idea to do something for the veterans.
Attend Folk Festival
On Saturday, Aug. 25, 22 students from the Easton Junior/Senior High School accompanied Mrs. Kinsey to the American Folk Festival, held annually on the riverfront in Bangor.
The Easton School Department has sponsored this trip each year for approximately 15 years as an enrichment activity for the music and art students. The Folk Festival is an eclectic mix of performances from around the world, this year including bluegrass, honky tonk, Celtic, salsa, jazz and other styles of music. There is a dance venue, a crafters’ ‘mall’ and, of course, many types of food.

The students had an exciting day of culture to fill their senses, and came home tired, but having had a great experience.
Recreation adult outing
On Friday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. the group will depart from the Manor parking lot for lunch and pressing apple cider at the Francis Malcolm Science Center.
Participants are responsible for their own meal. Everyone welcome.
Craft Fair
The annual Craft Fair is slated Saturday, December 1st from 8:00AM to 3:00PM in the Easton Elementary School. Crafters should reserve a space by emailing
crazycountygirl96@gmail.com or call Melissa at 227-4093. Spots are $20.00 before October 31st or until full, whichever comes first. After October 31st it will increase to $40.00. Registration money benefits the Small School Restoration in Easton. There will also be raffles that directly benefit the Paige Aerin Lento Memorial.
