75 Years Ago – September 16, 1943
Recreation head — Dr. Malcolm D. Harris was appointed by Commander of Civilian Defense, Sidney F. Cook, as chairman of the War Recreation Committee for the city of Presque Isle. He succeeded Rev. E. Milton Grant who left for Cleveland.
Farley promoted — Harold C. Farley, the son of Mrs. Ruth H. Farley of Presque Isle, was promoted to the grade of Technical Sergeant. T/Sgt. Farley, who was an aerial gunner in a bomber squadron stationed in New Guinea, had taken part in 37 bombing raids against Japanese targets, for which he had been awarded the Air Medal
50 Years Ago – September 4, 1968
Local girl at National Scout meet — Kathryn King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clement King Jr. of Presque Isle, was chosen to represent the state of Maine by the Abnaki Scout Council of Bangor, and the New England National Scout Office in Boston. The event hosted 277 Senior Scouts from 40 states and 18 Girl Guides from Saskatchewan, Canada. There were four units of three troops each. Each troop had three patrols and each patrol contained seven to eight girls. Each patrol planned their regular ongoing activities of boating, swimming, crafts and conservation.
New institute instructors — The Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute appointed eight new instructors: Chester Ringdahl, Burton Tompkins, Patricia Dunton, Carol Wanbaugh, Margaret Coffin, Carol McGrath, R.N., Jacqueline Ayoob, R.N. and Norda Bellantoni, R.N.
Westfield boy wins — Frankie Kinney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kinney of Westfield, was winner of a Daily News contest that resulted in an all-expense paid trip to Boston to see a ball game between the Red Sox and Washington Senators. A sight-seeing of the city also took place.
25 Years Ago – September 15, 1993
Local members — Gov. John McKernan announced his appointments to the newly-created Loring Development Authority in Maine. The authority was created earlier in the year by the 116th Maine Legislature to act as a legal entity to accept the assets of Loring Air Force Base and to manage a locally driven process for the readjustment and reuse of the facility. The governor’s nominees were: Donald Collins of Caribou; Arthur Thompson of Limestone; Robert Umphrey of Presque Isle; Daniel Lapointe of Van Buren; Brian Thibeau of Fort Fairfield; Albert Watt of Limestone; David Dorsey of Fort Fairfield; Elizabeth B. Reuthe of Augusta; Paul R. Cariani of Presque Isle; and Lyndel J. Wishcamper of Freeport.
New pastor welcomed — William S. Fox of Oxford accepted the position of pastor at the West Chapman Advent Christian Church. He preached his first sermon on Aug. 1. Fox attended Berkshire Christian College in 1983 after graduating from high school. He later transferred his credits to Columbia Bible College in Columbia, S.C. There he majored in the Bible and minored in missions.
