100 Years Ago – Sept. 11, 1918
New ice buildings — The Houlton Ice Co. is building two new Ice houses above the Bryson Mill and are also putting in a temporary dam for increasing the depth of water, just above the railroad bridge.
Singing engagement — J. Dal Luther, who has been filling a singing engagement at the Dream Theatre during the past two weeks with such flattering success, can be heard only a few days longer, as he expects to leave at any moment for YMCA work overseas. His popular songs and recitations during the balance of his engagement should be heard.
75 Years Ago – Sept 16, 1943
Store changes hands — Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Bennett, who have been proprietors of Bennett’s Woman’s Wear Shop in the Pioneer Times block for the past 22 years, announced that they have disposed of the stock and fixtures of their business to Harry B. Green of Green Brothers, Presque Isle, and will retire from active business for the present.
Serving in the bond booth — Ladies of the Houlton Woman’s Club are now serving in the bond booth at Woolworth’s and will continue until Sept. 30. During this period proceeds from the sale of bonds and stamps at this booth will be credited to the National Federation of Women’s Clubs, which has set itself a grand goad of $300,000 to be raised in the 3rd War Loan Campaign for the purchase of a ‘Federation’ bomber. All members are urged to buy a bond that sufficient funds may be realized for this project.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 11, 1968
Contest winner — Lillian Benson of Monticello was a lucky winner in the Sears August Wishing Well contest. She won a range and commented that it is the first thing she’s ever won. John Sluka, manager of the stove department at Sears Presque Isle store, explained the range to Mrs. Benson.
Sale — Malcolm York and Owen Hannigan today announced that they have sold their interests in the Houlton Cable Television System to Mr. E. Nicholas Sanquinetti and Mr. Richard E. Davis, both of Barre, Vt. The new owners are operators of several other systems in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Fredericton, N.B. The local cable system was started in 1955. Offices of the company will continue to be maintained at their Bangor street location.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 15, 1993
Honor Joan Simpson — Employees of Houlton Regional Hospital gathered to view two nameplates recently added to the ‘Boy and the Boot Memorial Display’ in memory of Joan Simpson. Peg Hammond, foundation development director; Edna Cowperthwaite, blood bank supervisor; Carol Blood and Madolyn Boutillier, both staff nurses on the medical floor. Medical laboratory personnel and the nursing staff collected funds from co-workers to have Joan’s name placed on the memorial board. Joan worked at the hospital as a ward clerk on the medical surgical unit for 17 years, From 1976-1993.
Award winner — Rick Wotten received an excellence award from Smith and Wesson Plant Manager John Fitzpatrick. The awards were given quarterly.
