HOULTON, Maine — Things have been extremely busy at The Ark and we are now on overload with kittens. Right now we have 25 kittens and that does not include adult cats.
Until we get down on our numbers, we will not be taking anymore in unless it is an emergency. The volunteers at The Ark are working overtime to take care of all of these babies and we cannot thank them enough. Their work does not go unnoticed. Yesterday we took seven males to the vet and got them neutered, vaccinated and tested that bill alone was $1,000. We still have six females to go be spayed. These numbers do not include the 25 kittens that are too young to be done.
In the upcoming weeks we have several fundraiser’s scheduled to help out with all of these medical costs and also try to get oil in the tank before winter. We would like to thank you all for being so supportive of our work and the many donations of supplies. This has helped us tremendously.
Lucky, the little Manx cat, is back from the vet once again. He was there for 2 weeks having laser treatments and getting his hind end issues fixed. He is home and running around like a typical kitten. Lucky is now on a special diet which seems to be working great.! We are relieved and very happy to have him back home with us.
We have a little feral kitten named Yoda who has an ulcer on his eye. He is on drops four to five times a day and if this doesn’t work then they will have to remove his eye, so keep Yoda in your thoughts and prayers.
We are waiving the adoption fee for all altered cats for the month of September to qualifying homes. A pre-adopt form must be filled out and approved.
On Oct. 20 we are having an open house at the sanctuary in conjunction with the “Strut Your Mutt” event. The registration for this dog walk is at 9 a.m. at the Hollywood Pet Salon and the walk begins at 10. We will be walking 2.5 miles to the sanctuary. You do not need a dog to walk and everyone is welcome.
Anyone bringing in $20 in pledges will get a free t shirt. Pledge sheets are available at The Hollywood Pet Salon. This is a perfect time to make a positive change for the animals in our community. The open house will include a cookout, bake sale, silent auction, costume party for the dogs and the kids, a haunted tent, live music and much more so stay tuned for details. We hope everyone will come that day and help raise funds for all of the animals in our care.
Thank you for your continued support and as always thank you for reading our column.
