HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Lodge of Elks BPOE No. 835 has been in existence for 115 years, but the Elks organization is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2018.
In celebration of that milestone each lodge was offered a $1,500 grant to be used to support the local community.
“Upon learning that Houlton High School was in need of some science equipment our grant was secured to assist the school,” said Exalted Ruler Mike Hannigan. “The money will be used to purchase an important biotechnology machine for the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and math curricula.”
This project was made possible by a grant from the Elks National Foundation, the charitable arm of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Through its Community Investments Program, the Elks National Foundation awards grants to local Elks Lodges to help the Elks strengthen their communities. This year, the Elks National Foundation will award $6.5 million in grants to benefit Elks communities.
