The Owls’ volleyball team enjoyed a solid weekend with two wins at home. The Owls defeated Fisher College in three close sets (26-24, 25-23 and 27-25) and then completed its second sweep of the day with a 3-0 win over UM-Machias. The university’s soccer teams both went 0-2 on the weekend. The men suffered a 7-0 loss at Northern Vermont University-Johnson on Saturday. The Owls, who were without the services of seven injured players, then lost 3-1 at Unity College on Sunday. Chad Bartlett, a junior midfielder from Bradley, scored for the Owls against the Rams.
The women lost to Northern Vermont University-Johnson 5-0 in their NAC opener Saturday. The Owls then narrowly missed out on their first victory of the season on Sunday, losing a tough 3-2 game in double overtime at Vermont Tech. Despite competing without a pair of key players, UMPI battled the Knights until the game winner was scored in the 101st minute. Senior Jordi Legassie and junior Sofia Crouse each scored a goal for the Owls, and Casey Lovely, normally a defender, stepped up to fill in as goalkeeper.
