To the editor:
Sen. Susan Collins: Why do you think President Trump picked Kavanaugh as a nominee to the Supreme Court? This nominee has stated that he believes that no president could be charged with crimes while in office. Quite obvious, wouldn’t you say?
Even Mitch McConnell has stated that Kavanaugh would be the most difficult nominee to pass the confirmation process. Why? A paper trail, perhaps?
Sen. Collins met with this candidate and came away making the statement they had an “excellent conversation.” You can’t judge a book by looking at the cover. Look at his past record:
Fact: Kavanaugh’s record as a judge shows he has consistently voted against protecting the environment.
Fact: He has gone so far as to support a coal mining company after it dumped waste into six miles of streams, literally destroying them.
Fact: Twenty-five environmental groups sent a letter to the U.S. Senate’s Judiciary Committee warning of the dangers for the environment if Kavanaugh is confirmed.
Fact: Kavanaugh has distinguished himself with his record as an enemy of reasonable efforts to control pollution and protect clean water and public health.
Fact: This issue is critical for Maine and its thousands of miles of streams used for drinking water. Our streams also are critical for our fishermen and other wildlife.
The list goes on and on.
Sen. Collins: This will be an historic vote. This man’s nomination must be rejected. Surely we can do better than this.
Sen. Collins, I have supported you over the decades, but if you vote to confirm this very unqualified nominee, that support will end.
Senator, you have one of two choices: Do you want to be part of the solution or part of the problem?
