The Maine School of Science and Mathematics girls and the Greater Houlton Christian Academy boys were the cross country team winners, with each squad’s lead runner claiming individual victories on a wet day in Madawaska on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The MSSM girls posted 34 points to finish ahead of Fort Fairfield (39), Fort Kent (58) and Washburn (83).
The GHCA boys scored a meet-low 35 points, while Washburn had 41 and Madawaska 48.
Dolcie Tanguay of MSSM placed first in the girls’ competition with a time of 21 minutes and 40.5 seconds. Twenty one other runners competed, with Madison McCarthy, also of MSSM, finishing as runner-up, just a half a second behind Tanguay in 21:41. Jessica Halsey of Fort Fairfield took third, 2.1 seconds behind McCarthy with a 21:43.1 clocking.
GHCA’s Teagan Ewings was fourth in 22:30.
Washburn’s Kassie Farley was tops for her team, coming in 13th overall in 27:36.4.
For MSSM, Jialan Deal and Charlotte McCulloh also placed in the top 10 to help their team win. Daisy Grady and Caijsa Benson were in the top 10 for the Tigers.
In the boys’ race, Cole Winslow of GHCA crossed the finish line in 20:22.5, which was one second ahead of runner-up Jay Philbrick of MSSM. Aidan Churchill of Washburn claimed third place in 20:30.5.
Jeremy Stone, Isaac Potter and Joel Carmichael were all in the top 10 out of the 35 competitors to help the Eagles pull off the win.
Class B County teams Caribou and Presque Isle and Class C Houlton made the trip south for Saturday’s Old Town Sectionals.
The Viking boys came in second with 48 points, the Wildcat boys ninth with 231 and the Shires 11th with 323.
With a time of 17:30.75, Dylan Marrero of the Vikings was the overall boys’ winner out of 80 runners. Jordan Duplessie was fourth in 18:00.02 and Ethan Holmquist eighth in 18:28.17. Kyle Boucher (13th) and Malachai Willey (22nd) were the team’s other scorers.
Trace Cyr led PI by placing 28th in 19:23.78, with teammate Owen McQuarrie just two slots behind in 19:29.36.
Daniel Ross was Houlton’s first runner to cross the line. His time was 20:34.65, good for 48th place. Brandon Roshto was second for the Shires.
On the girls’ side, Caribou placed fourth with 85 points, while Presque Isle was sixth with 152.
The Vikes’ Abigail Wimmer finished as runner-up behind meet winner Erin Gerbi of Orono in the field of 64 runners. Wimmer’s time of 20:19.8 was less than eight seconds behind Gerbi. Ashley Violette was 12th in 21:48.07 and Hailey Holmquist 25th in 23:14.61 for the Vikings. Kacie Haney (29th) and Emily Austin (32nd) were Caribou’s other scoring runners.
Madison Jandreau of Presque Isle took eighth place in 21:30. Teammate Ellie Smith was 34th in 23:57.62.
Houlton did not figure in the team results with only four runners, but Emmalyne Drake was the fastest Shire in 23:31.58. Makenna Cooley was next for Houlton in 25:55.96.
